So, I haven't updated on the Broody Brigade in a while, mostly because things are slow on the war front, but also because I just haven't thought about it much. Margie has been leading the brigade for a while, and has pretty much been solidly broody for a few weeks--except that she will lay eggs and act totally normal when she's in broody jail, but when I let her loose she's back to broody attitude. Elda, my sweet Elda, was caught up in the broody madness, but was quickly cured and brought back to the right side. For a short while there, the two Partridge Plymouth Rocks were flirting with broodiness, too, but seem to have settled down.
There are four, maybe five hens in my flock that, until last night, I have always been confident would never switch sides and join forces with the Broody Brigade. These are as follows: my Light Brown Leghorn, Tiwhiri; my Silver Lakenvelder, Huka; my Ancona, Rangi; my insane Golden Campine, Ihi; and the maybe is Sora the Red Sexlink, who I wouldn't expect to brood, but her sister Skua has, so who knows. Anyway, last night at roost time, to my complete bewilderment, Ihi was sitting on a nest. My first thought was that she was sick. Ihi is Crazy with a capital C, not the mothering type by any stretch! But, sure enough, when I reached under her to lift her out, I could feel her heated-up, plucked-bare belly. For some reason, Ihi has gone broody!
This morning, I looked in the nests expecting to find Ihi in there, but only one nest was occupied with Margaret in it. I looked all over and couldn't find Ihi for anything. I knew she was in the coop last night, so she couldn't be far! On my way back to check the coop again, I finally found her--puffing up with her tail practically folded over her back because someone interrupted her at the water bucket.Oh, boy, this is going to be fun! She's at the point where she's not quite broody enough to lock up for it, but I know it's coming. I know...

Baby pictures! Nothing brightens your day like these faces! Here's what I get as soon as I sit down--a lap full of babies!(And Endymion at the bottom left thinking about hopping up, too.
)

Then, they all gather by the fence like they're waiting for me to open it up. Sorry, babies!
![]()
Dorking love! Here's Lydda sitting on the EcoGlow
![]()
Donnie boyHis chest feathers are coming in so dark!
![]()
Here's a comparison of Lydda and Don together. Also, they were being cute.
![]()
And Callette because she was left out.Izzy snuck in there, too.
![]()
CazzieHer little fuzzy feet!
![]()
Yep, those fuzzy feet.
![]()
Umru being a cutie.Lydda photobombed. The angle of this picture is weird and makes Lydda look huge, but she's the smallest of the Dorkings and actually smaller than Umru in person.

Endy's cute face

Chicks by the lap full! Rooska's vying for attention at the front.
![]()
Rooska apparently does this a lot.I wasn't trying to get pictures of the babies scratching or anything...
![]()
Izzy and Donnie 'foraging'.They're so focused!
![]()
The last two are of Flury because she was being a butt. "Who me?"

I was just trying to get a picture that shows her feathers because they are getting splashy now! It didn't work out so well, but you can kind of see a splash in her wing and some splashy tail feathers coming in in this picture:

The pictures are so sweet. Their legs are growing now and feet feathers are so cute. I love how the jump up on you. They must consider you part of the flock and that is precious. Endy has the cutest face I have ever seen. I don't want her to get her big girl feathers because she's going to lose those markings that she has. I can see the splash coming in on the feathers. She is going to be beautiful.
That's funny about the broodys. Even chickens that are not know for going broody will join the cause. They probably saw Marge with her babies and wanted some of their own.
Thanks so much for taking the time to share your little sweethearts with us. I really appreciate it. They make my day and I hope you have a great day. Give them all a little hug and kiss from me.
Oh,boy!noooooooooo!broody!we don't want Broodies,unless we want chicks!
Ther so cute!i can't want till I get my own![]()
Oh, I know, Endy is such a gorgeous chick! I just have to make sure I have plenty of pictures of her so that once she's bigger, I can look back at how pretty she was. One of my other Easter-eggers, Cressida, was a beautiful chick, too, but I think I only have one picture of her and it's not even a full body picture, just her face. :/ She was lovely, a medium red-brown color with a cream-colored halo pattern on her head and chipmunk stripes. Of course, she's a beautiful hen now, so there's that.

Yep, I think they've gone crazy with chick envy.Just wait until the babies start going outside regularly! They'll all have to have some!
No, noooo broodies needed here!! I think I've got plenty of new chicks, thanks! They're like the worst kind of enablers, those birds.
You're not too far from your chicks now, right? Just a few days left?![]()
