Pipd's Peeps!

Well, I'm beat! Since the weather's so nice here this weekend, I've started moving some fencing and posts around. The plan is to shrink the main flock's yard from roughly 50x100 to closer to 50x50 so that I can more easily net over it. They've been fenced off from the back of their yard for most of a year now, I think, to keep them safe from hawks anyway, so rather than keeping that section fenced off entirely, like when they're free-ranging, it's now open. The extra fence will either go toward the second run on the Cochin coop (which I've decided to build rather than buy as I can build something much more sturdy than I can buy) or I'll just run it along the road at a distance to keep them from bypassing the old and worn out road fencing and getting hit or something. Anyway, I got all the posts put in for the new edge of the yard, just gotta finish attaching fence to them tomorrow. The posts ended up kind of zig-zaggy because I eyeballed it, but I don't think the chickens will mind. 🤭

Looking at Jack's foot, it actually looks like he's going to make a full recovery! It does look a tiny bit puffier than his other foot, but the fluid buildup he had gotten a few days ago has gone away and there doesn't appear to be any peeling or necrotic tissue so far. It is still a bit more tender than the other foot, as he reacted a bit more strongly when I bent his toes than he did with the other foot, but seems to be recovering fine! :wee

@Crazy Maizie how are the newbies doing? Any new shenanigans from Mr. Rooster? :pop

Sounds like a productive weekend! I'm glad to hear about Jack! :clap

The little fluffball hasn't done any new shenanigans, but I decided to move them closer to my chickens at least during the day. At night they will still be in the shed. My EE decided she's the boss since JB passed. She also decided to fight the rooster through the fencing which is the 2x4 welded wire. He decided to fight back. So, he's a bit scraped up. They have settled down or else I would add another barrier so that they can't get to one another.

I'm a dummy though. The weather was nice (see how I'm blaming this on the weather 🤣) and so went to rural king knowing that they had banties. They had 7 left and the lady was like if you take 6, you have to take all 7. I was like yeah, I was planning on taking them all (because they are straight run). I then asked for 2 barred rocks and 2 sapphire gems. I really wanted to add some more EEs (I know they are mutts, but I love them). She said she had one, but their brooder went below 85° and she didn't feel comfortable selling them. I understand, but was a bit disappointed. So, got the gems (mutts as well, but I've read good things about them).

I don't have the greatest pics yet, but I'm pretty sure one of the banties is a cochin. One is a barred oegb and the others are some other color of oegb. The barred one had pasty butt. I've taken care of it, but it's obvious its had it for a bit, because its bum is bare of feathers. It's doing good - but also the lady should have just let me have it. 😁 I really wanted one of the bantam brahmas they had, but apparently another person came and got them before I got there. These guys are almost 2 weeks old. The manager of that area has decided to keep bantams in the back for a good week before bringing them out to the floor.

Apparently with all the egg craziness, people had been getting chicks all day long. I'm guessing in about 8 months or so when people realize how much work chickens can be and egg prices normalize, there will be a lot up for grabs.

Cuties!! Haha, blame the weather all you want--I'm ready for babies with all this warm weather and sunshine we've been having, too! 😁

I see a Buff Cochin, a Barred OEGB, a Spangled OEGB (the chipmunk one with the white front) and several Crele OEGBs in your bantam mix. Creles are usually sexable by down coloration at this age, so if you get individual shots I can probably tell you how many are male and how many are female right away. 🙂 The others you'll have to wait on, but males of both breeds tend to pop combs pretty early so you should know within a few weeks whether they're male or not.

Oh, and no need to justify any breed choices to me! If you're happy with what you got, that's all that matters. :D

Thanks. :hugs I over explain because it seems like a lot of people like to pick apart anything and everything these days.

Oops meant to post pics. I am not every good at this and hope I actually picked different ones especially the ones that look the same. 🤭

I am pretty sure we know what 4&7 are, but included them anyway.

Ah, yeah, I can understand that. Hey, I won't judge as long as you don't judge any of my craziness. 🤣

Okay, here we go!

1 is a Crele OEGB cockerel
2 is a Spangled OEGB
3 looks like a Crele OEGB pullet... but she has the wrong leg color for the breed so keep an eye on her in case she's tricking me 🤔
4 is your Barred OEGB
5 is another Crele OEGB cockerel
6 is another Spangled OEGB
7 is your Buff Cochin

Adorable babies! :love Ugh, my girls need to get laying so I can hatch!!

The fencing is all done! Now I've just got to get some netting and work that over the top, and the girls will have a much more comfortable space to be in before free-range every day. 😁

I had planned to finally get the 8-month pictures of the kiddos as well today when I was done with the fencing, but I'm so worn out now that I'll have to practically drag myself out there to close coops tonight. :th Tomorrow afternoon it is for those!

Well that figures! I'm betting the cochin and barred are cockerels too. 😭

I know the feeling of having so many plans, but not enough time or energy.
