Pipped near top I am not sure if I should assist?

you can try dabbing some coconut oil or mineral oil on the membrane with a q-tip to get it moist and pliable again
Thank you. I have pulled back the shell near the pip and the tip to find it was indeed dryyyyy...i put coconut oil on it. Should i try to peel it off or let him trt for a certain amount of time? He has been at this for 48 hours now but only had the coconut oil since last night around 11:30pm. Thanks so much !

And if/when you feel the need to assist, start by chipping away the shell on the pointed end. Watch for bleeders, and stop if you get much bleeding.
Don’t pull the duckling from the shell, even if you remove one end. Let it push its way out. Usually they won’t push until they are fully absorbed and ready to do so.
Thank you. This is what he currently looks like. He has attempted several times this am to push out..is breathing is slowing down ( probably exhausted doing this for 48 hours) should i continue to let him try? Is the yellow the yolk sac still not absorbed? When is the time that I would need to begin peeling that thin membrane off? Thank you so much...this is the only hope for a buddy for my mallard born 3 days ago.

I can only tell you what I’d did. I peeled the membrane back as per the video but put it back in and he freed himself after that and was up and running in an hour. I totally went with my gut! But I just couldn’t watch it struggle when I knew it was something to do with incubating mess ups. He didn’t come out till the yolk sac was fully absorbed, I didn’t take him out just tore the membrane as it was stuck. One other chick got itself out with some yolk still attached but it dried up quite quickly.

Thank you and so happy to hear of your success!! My gut tells me to pull the membrane piece that is smooshing his wing t his bill. He has been pushing sideways against that this whole time. Would that harm him? Also what are your thoughts?? is that the yolk still there ? Looks like it but this is my 1st time. Thanks again!

I don’t know but Mine Lay for a while not doing anything so I think it was absorbing yolk. It didn’t get out of shell for a wee while, but just allowed him to do the rest, he still kicked with his legs etc to get out

Looking good! You are doing great!
You can peel the membrane away if you don’t see any veins. Try peeling the outer membrane first, just under the shell, then moisten the inner one to check for blood vessels.

Have you candled the other end to see if the air cell is still intact? If the duckling broke into it, then it has a little more room. If it’s still intact, then it’s likely more cramped, and I’d be more inclined to assist more aggressively now.

Freeing the head would be the best first goal. Then try looking down it’s belly toward the other end of the egg, that’s where the yolk would be. Hopefully you can see if any is unabsorbed or not.
It may kick right out into your hand, so don’t be surprised!

Oh, and you are the one there seeing what’s happening, so trust your gut.

I just had the same thing happen about a month ago. You can do this! Go with what WVduckchick says, she got me through mine and a sweet little duck was born. Keep picking at the shell as long as you don't see veins and get it's head out if possible.
