Good call, and good intervention. You assessed correctly, and responded correctly, with only enough assistance. I have done similar: Pip at wrong end, open just a bit to allow oxygenation, and leave the chick to finish. I will often do only that much, and leave that egg until all others have hatched before doing an assist. (if the chick hasn't made progress on her own.) I know that once I intervene, I am on commit to complete the intervention. So, won't do so unless it's do or die.
