Muscovy ducklings... boy, oh boy has this been an experience. I currently have a duckling pipped on the wrong end. Beak is out a little and chirps time to time. BUT the last duckling I left like this ended up dying :( Technically it is hatching 2 days early but all the other living ones I have hatched were also days early.
I will be obsessively looking at this egg today so I can post any pics! I need help!

If you are going to assist, carefully remove a piece of shell and shell membrane. Look to see if the membrane is bloodless. If the membrane covering the duckling is bloodless, remove another small piece of shell and its membrane. Do this around the end of the egg where it's externally pipped. At the first sight of blood, wipe it away with a sterile cloth, then return the egg to the incubator, wait an hour or so, and repeat. Do not remove the duckling from the shell, but do remove the shell on the hatching end only so that the duckling can push its way free when it's time to hatch. Be aware that the membrane may dry to the duckling and may need to be peeled back slightly so there's no impediment to hatching.

There was a tiny amount of blood on the top but quickly dried with a q tip. I put him back in. still peeping and he broke his hole open a little bigger

Sounds like he may be zipping soon. When chicks/ducklings/etc. hatch on the wrong end it often goes well with no problems. Sometimes, after zipping, the baby is unable to exit the shell depending on how pointed the eggs is and exactly where the zipping takes place.

Once zipping is occurring it is safe to remove the duckling from the shell.

I have muscovy eggs hatching under the duck January 13th.

Good luck and happy holidays!

The last one that did this passed away :(
Going to keep checking and hope for the best, hoping for a Christmas duckling.
Happy holidays!!:)

For ducklings that pipped at the wrong end I give them usually 10-24 hours on their own (depending on progress as some do hatch without issues) then I peel a very small piece of shell and allow them to rest for 1-2 hours then repeat with another piece and waiting another 1-2 hours. This helps to give them time to fully absorb the yolk and veins to finish receding.

If you mean the last time you assisted in this manner the duckling died, it was NOT you that caused it to die. Tell me, was the yolk completely absorbed on the duckling that died?
The one who passed pipped the wrong end. I peeled back the shell where I could to give him some air and within an hour or 2 he passed. I was devastated and did not open it up all the way but from what I could see that was exposed, he did seem ready to come out. there was no blood and he looked huge. As does this guy. seems like he cant move at all besides his head.

Thinking this will be my plan today. The casing under the shell is realllly rubbery and dry. And the sack around him looks mostly clear with some veins.
