I know this has been asked before and I'm sure I've even read it on here, I'm just having difficulty finding the answer. I have 2 smaller than average duck eggs in the incubator right now, they're on day 26 if I counted correctly (went in on 7/6) but one definitely looks like he's trying to be early because he's already pipped externally. I can see his tiny little black bill and bit of face every so often. I could hear a faint tapping from both eggs before I went to bed late Monday (7/29), last night I could hear Egg 1 peeping a little before I went to bed and this morning he had a hole in his shell. Egg 2, I thought was dying last night. I couldn't hear tapping and couldn't see any movement. So I was pleasantly surprised to hear Egg 2 tapping again this morning but I don't see any movement in the air cell when I shine a flashlight in so I'm not completely sure where this guy is tapping. I thought the tapping noise was from the duckling/chick tapping on the shell. Is this correct? (Again, I should know... except I'm on like day 5 of a terrible migraine so I'm not braining very well right now.) I don't hear any peeping from Egg 2, just faint tapping. And it sounds like he's taking longer breaks between tapping workouts. If he's positioned correctly and trying to break into the air cell, would I hear tapping?

I know by the calendar he should have a few more days, and maybe he's just a little slower than his brother. (All my fowl are called he/him until it's obvious that they're girls...I think it cuts down on the disappointment if I wanted girls.) At the same time, this egg looked more full than Egg 1 and they really are smaller than even a "normal" small duck egg. Actually, when I candled last Thursday, Egg 2 was so full I started to question whether or not it was really a duck egg. I thought maybe I had lost my ability to feel the difference between duck and chicken eggs after...8+ yrs.

These eggs came from a pen with Cayuga, Rouen and Khaki potential parents, only 2 drakes - a Khaki and a Cayuga. I'm not sure why the eggs are so small. (Egg in the center of the three in the attachment is one of the little eggs. The other two eggs came from the same potential parents. KIMG1765.JPG )

Anyway. Basically looking for reassurance that tapping for probably about 36 hrs at this point is "normal". Or, if it's not, do I make a safety hole? Not sure what a safety hole would help if he's not heading towards the air cell. If he's smaller than average, as I somewhat expect since his egg is so small, could this cause him to have more trouble hatching?

If you can hear peeping, the duckling has internally pipped into the air cell. I believe they have 24 hours of air before they need to pip externally. @casportpony or @chickens really should know. If it's been that long since they have internally pipped they may need a safety hole.

If you do a youtube search for duckling internal pip you should find some good videos and an internal pip is fairly obvious.

Resting for periods between active tapping/moving/attempted escape is normal. If you candle during "rest" time you might not see much movement, but sometimes if you move the light around and tap the shell with your fingernail the little one will respond and you'll get an idea of what might be going on in there. Ducks can take a long time to hatch, so I wouldn't panic yet, but it's good to be prepared for the next steps.

A few questions...
Is that a current picture of the eggs?
Is their any bruising or discoloration on the eggs?
Forced air or still air incubator?
Temp and humidity for the first 25 days?
Current temp and humidity?

It's a fairly current picture, from this morning. The other two bigger eggs haven't been in the incubator as long, they're just there to show the size difference. I don't see any marks on the shell. I turned the brightness way down on my flashlight thinking that would help me see any marks/bruises earlier today (normal brightness is somewhat blinding reflecting off the shell... especially with a migraine). I didn't see anything. I think it sounds like the tapping is strongest near the air cell, like right at the bottom edge of the cell. So I'm hoping he's headed the right way. I justed wasn't sure if it's normal to hear tapping before they break through that inner membrane. He's not peeping so I didn't think he was through that membrane yet.
I'm happy to leave "Little Weirdo" alone and let him keep on tappin' if that's what he wants to do. Especially with my current migraine brain fog. At the same time, I didn't want to let the migraine be an excuse to ignore this little guy if he needs help. But it sounds like tapping for a longer time is ok? Should I worry more if he's still just tapping tomorrow? I have Egg 2 next to Egg 1 hoping E1's peeping will encourage E2 to...tap harder or whatever. E1 has been peeping his little bill off in that shell today.

That looks like what I saw in Egg 1 last night. I expected to see Egg 2's bill in the air cell today but I still don't see anything. I checked for discoloration again and don't see anything. He's still tapping near the back/bottom edge of the air cell. I could see some wiggle movement near where the tapping is coming from. I'm pretty sure I can feel the tapping too. I'm hoping his brother's peeping convinces him to do something overnight. Either something that will tell me I need to help him, or that he's getting it on his own.
