SCOOB BAGGED A MINK!

Wife and I were out on first cool night of entire summer when Scoob went down into draw that bisects where pens are located. He had mink cornered in the only patch of green grass on property. Initially I did know what it was so went down to see what was up. First I saw of it was critter jumping at Scoob. After maybe a 5 minute chase Scoob caught and killed the very smelly critter. It is either a female or juvenile male, I think former. Scoob smells now like hiney. These critters can kill a lot of chickens real quick, especially like hens I have brooding on ground.

Again Scoob did good. He did not share with pup. The body must be disposed of otherwise it could find its way into house a puppy play toy.

MAJOR SHAKEUP THIS EVENING

Late today three dogs visited and Scoob took them on. If the largest did not get itself trapped then I would have very likely lost Scoob to it. It was a pitbull pushing nearly 100 lbs. Scoob was able to drive off other two. Nephew had to do an unpleasant thing. Without our intervention, even a single standard LGD would have been taking serious risk taking on such an animal in anything that approximates a fair fight. Anyone foolish enought to think a single LGD can take one like this is an idiot. LGD may be able to handle wolves and standard dogs but this beast was built to fight. There are no compromises in its design to deal with dealing with elements, no compromises to make for a strong alarming bark, no compromises for making a low energy requirment dog. This was bred to fight. It is designed bite and to withstand attacks from similarly capable assailants. A fence is going up and rifle is being upgraded. My dog takes care of wildlife issues I have very well but this challenge would have required three LGD's in the form of Great Pyrenees.

Pits actually weigh in about 35-45 lbs. 100 lbs is going to be some type of Mastiff breed, with who knows what mixed in.
I have seen the mastiff crossed variaty. They are longer legged than this character. This has the typical proportions of a pitbull but maybe a little heavy in body. Maybe more accurate breed name for the 35 - 45 lb range is American Pitbull and this is simply a pitbull cross. Someone in know indicated that multiple crossed used to make upper sizes for pit usage. Those crosses then bred to breed true.

Big pitbull in question appears to be a first generation cross of female American pitbull by a bull mastiff. Saw both when running line to be fenced. Neighbor is / has been breeding them.

I seem to remember that your neighbors had been warned around their dogs, otherwise I hope the dog wasnt killed for its first infraction ( I understand you have every right to do so)...we just moved in May and my dog got loose (trying to walk back to San Francisco I think-- and I was glad to see that the sheriff brought her home instead of shooting her-- she is a big 80 pound hairy black dog, not a teacup poodle, but was just a lost dog-- now we secure the gate with a chain as well)....

I have dentified six nearby households that have dogs that at least walk up to my property boundry. This latest group is the most recently identified and they have the most animals. They have created issues with another neighbor regarding poultry losses without dog owner making adjustments to prevent losses.

Dogs of this group have committed multiple infractions and are very large presenting potential risk to child in our household.

Ugh, sounds like bandogges. Not good, and especially not running loose in packs. Sorry to hear you are dealing with this, and REALLY sorry to hear people are selfish enough to be breeding them, when the shelters are so loaded with pit bulls and pit mixes of every description.

I just returned my "new" pyrenees to a rescue group. I knew he wasn't good for LGD, but he turns out not good inside the house with cats either. Nearly killed my cats on three separate occasion in less than seven days. He was described as house broken, good with kids, cats and dogs. My eldery pyrenees mix needed a bud so we thought this would be good NOT. The dog is too unpredictable, predatory behaivor was too strong to be of any use. that dog will maul a child.

Anyway, what you need is a pressa canerio or caucasian ovcharka. latter dog was used by KGB and by East German STASI (secret police) both breeds weigh in excess of 100 pounds more like in excess of 150 pound males. Both are killing machines. Caucasian is especially dangerous because its thick fur and extra skin on his neck allows him to spin almost all the way around in his skin to counterattack the dog/wolf that is biting him in the neck. More reasonable dog would be a Mareema Sheepdog.

If you think you are upto handling a caucasian ovcharka, there is a breeder in US who sells pups.

yup time to use a 30-30 to deal with a 100 pound menacing dog.

It falls back to issue, fix must not cost more than problem. Fencing more cost effective then re-dogging especially if new dog s potential threat in their own right.
