all the answers could fit the question. back during the plagues in Europe, white eggs became the preferred item over other eggs because white was associated with cleanliness and may still be viewed that way, to me brown eggs have a more appealing look and that is why i like them, they look more homey then like the institutional look of white eggs. tinted eggs are a nice change to life and that i think is why they'll gain more in popularity in the market place, as long as the news doesn't start a rouse about their color., kids love em, and their fun to collect and mix in the basket with the other naturally colored eggs. but again i think brown eggs are a more relaxed color there for more appealing.

The answer IS - the power of the media.

Brown eggs, - local eggs are better - Brown eggs are healthier (this was popular when I was a kid), May contain less cholesterol (advertised in the 70's and 80's).

White eggs- Cleaner, less expensive.

basically white egg producers didn't have to push them, the price compared to brown did it for them, but as in all things the reason white is more common is the almighty dollar.

Truth - the commercial egg layers were developed from the leghorn breed. Leghorns naturally produce large white eggs , lay often , and their feed to production ratio is naturally low.

I know when I tell people about my eggs they always ask if they are brown...
Then I get....
"brown eggs are so much richer that "regular eggs" they make the best cakes"
I just smile.

I know around here, people think brown eggs are organic. They also like EE eggs. I think they think white eggs are a trick - they were bought in the grocery store and then resold as "farm fresh".

Another advantage to white eggs beside the obvious feed ratio, is candling and grading. They are much easier to see blood spots, etc. over the brown eggs.

My personal favorite is the EE right now. Love those darn shells!
