Quakers, do you mean in terms of predators or weather?

If you mean that the weather makes it too dangerous to stay outside, then that's exactly my question... What's "too dangerous"? (Where the predators are concerned, I totally get that!

BTW, what is "spoiler warning"???? I clicked to reply to Quaker's last post and a wierd link showed up in my post?

Sorry! Predators! we have bear, cougar, coons, owls, wolves/coyotes and so forth night time here is a Mecca of critters who'd adore a duck dinner, weather wise? nah, they'd be ok... i'm in Canada, blink and the weather changes... seriously you could be in a t-shirt & jeans Monday and snow boot by Friday lol

The reply warning? perhaps just a glitch?

Quakers, no need to be sorry!

I'm in Michigan, I get what you mean about the weather, we say if ya don't like it, well just wait 5 minutes or so... It will change! LOL And yep, we get the critters too. 2012 has been the year of the fox 'round these parts. I've never seen one til this year, and had 4 in the front yard. But I think they've moved on. 37'F and rain today. Yuck.

I searched the main page about the spoiler warning, looks like I hit a button by mistake and that is the way to add hidden text. (??) Learning every day!

No problem! Again, i go by they have there mini barn and this huge area of cedars that tower into the sky, they can sort out if they want in/out... the night it was -15C with a windchill don't recall actually temp, some of the girls dog piled in the barn by close up time lol

and the one duck isn't the most friendly with the little girls she was piling with, they figure it out... honestly, i gave up worrying when i came by one day dressed in way to many clothes and one of the ducks was bathing in a water bowl

my ducks seem to love the wind! they just stand out and face it like a dog hanging it's head out the window!

now tonight it's going to start getting really cold and it's going to be in the single digits over the weekend so I'm going to rake all of their straw out of their igloo and then put in a ton of fresh so they can burrow down in it. the guy at the merchantile also told me to use the "grass straw mix because it doesn't break down as easily so they have a good florring when it's cold. i'm concerned about the area around their little water tub so it stays dry and not muddy so i'm just going to put extra straw around and under it. this is the official test for winter!

My ducks too, new2ducks! Thanks for telling me. I use deep litter method everywhere, just keep adding layers. My pen tends to get muddy, ESP near water. The last time I added a huge load of leaves (brown mulch material, which gets broken down by the nitrogens in green materials... Or duck poo). I was unhappy with areas where I got green glass clippings mixed in... Seemed to me like it was breaking down more quickly. Perhaps if I'd had a thicker layer of straw or more leaves to put atop the green, it might've been okay. Not sure tho. I've also mixed alfalfa, my ducks loved that and it smelled good and sweet to me, so I guess bottom line is more is probly better in terms of winter insulation.

Single digits, wow you guys are tough. Stay warm!
