No, I get why rehoming is bad. I just don't know what *else* you're supposed to do with them if not releasing in the wild. We don't have too many raccoons where I'm from, at least, other than in the zoo.
 
Here's an idea we've implemented that works great for those nighttime raiders. My husband installed a motion dectector about three feet off the ground on the outside of our hen house, but instead of putting in light bulbs he installed a plug-in adapter that you screw into a light socket. (Can pick up at any hardware store). He then plugged in an extention cord and ran it to our house and plugged the other end into a radio. When the motion detector senses movement, instead of turning on a light it turns on the radio in our bedroom. It's our personal predator alarm system and works like a champ - as long as you know how to use a shotgun! Have used the system for five years and have not lost a single chicken in all that time.
