Please explain the Birchen Gene

your barred rock rooster is not pure ,must be dark barred rock because his son is not barred .
he is Silver and gold ,one copy of each .his mama must be golden based Brown leghorn or americauna .

Since the father was mixed, he could have a gold gene which he could pass to his sons, meaning the mother wouldn’t have to be gold.

yes it is a possibility too .
when crossing 2 crosses a lot thing get mixed up .

He’s not birchen. He has leakage. By the look of him, the light Brahma was the mother. The father was definitely not a purebred barred rock.

Barred chicks are supposed to have a white dot on their heads. Even the chicks without barring had headspots?

All 9 roos from that hatch had white spots, the father could be a cross, maybe Americans and rock? This guy and 3 like him and the 5 barred ones. We kept one and gave one away for breeding, both this look.

What do you mean by white spots? A single spot on top of the head is usually the indicator of barring.

A single spot on each, all 9 rooms had A white spot on their head, even these birchen or leakage ones.

On chick down, a white spot on top of the head is supposed to mean barring. Though I can see a chick having a false headspot if it is a mixed color like your’s.

I’m guessing your chicks’ colorations were somewhere between silver columbian and black.

Some had a whitish chest, found some pics but they're not great
