Please God. Make the hurt stop. (very sad...be warned)

I'm so sorry to hear about your troubles. Have you got some vitamins+electrolytes you can add to the water for Gretel? I hope your missing chickens show up

If the owner of the dog is an unpleasant character maybe you should go to the Police... Loose animals causing loss of livestock is unacceptable. Unless you want to take care of it yourself, but you may end up getting in trouble.

The police won't do anything around here about these kinds of matters...it only causes more trouble. I learned this from other chicken friends. I'll do everything NOT to get into trouble, but I'm rural, so in effect, almost anything goes, no matter what the "rules" are.

What dog? I haven't seen it. Pretty much all you have to say.

Just like Dee said, even when you have proof positive, the justice is more than limited.

BUT...I do have good news! I found a vet who "does chickens and ducks"! This guy is FANTASTIC! I spent several hours this morning looking for ANY answers. MFA, Orscheln, my own vet whom I have had for 4 years...no dice. One last stop to Gordon's feed put me in the right direction.

The guy (Doug) told me of another vet office. Within 5 or 6 minutes I had my Gretel on the exam table. He gave her a complete, total exam. He told me her leg was not broken and had no fractures. He cleaned her wounds completely and sprayed some metallic looking stuff on her, a liquid bandage. He gave her an antibiotic shot for infection that he said would be good for a week in her little system. This vet really took the time. They were busy and he FIT me in. He answered all my questions, patiently, and even offered extra advice. This guy is a gold mine. His associate is supposed to be even better. Can't see it, but can't wait to meet him. My dogs have a new doc now, too.

Dr. told me, as many of us might know, that trauma and some injuries to chickens and ducks are a big part psychological. Birds are so sensitive. I need to do physical therapy with Gretel every day and if I do, there is a great chance of good recovery. She may never be 100%, but she will be alive and able to enjoy a good quality of life.

A big surprise was at the checkout. All this wonderful, loving animal medical care cost a whopping $32.40. I was so prepared to pay 3 times that.

Since her treatment this morning, she has been a little bit tired, but she has gotten up on her good leg once, ate 8 bites of feed and two small pieces of cheese, and is drinking plenty of water.

Gretel is a duck, a beautiful Cayuga and maybe I shouldn't keep posting her updates her, but this is where my story is. Hope everyone is OK with that.

That is wonderful news!!! Please keep posting updates here...we want to follow Gretel's recovery :)

Funny you should mention that. Another amazing thing about this doc. He had the nurse hold her up as he gave Gretel the shot and showed me exactly where it needs to go.....right into the breast muscle. But at his price, I think I'll just let him do it...LOL

I just finished therapy session and put her to bed. She seems happy and content, thank goodness.

BTW, Jackie's little ones are doing OK. They really miss their Mom, but seem to be doing good in my bedroom. Not much ever really works out the way we always want it to. Two dogs are upstairs, two downstairs, birds are on the main floor...kitchen and my bedroom. Just need to keep everyone safe!
