Please help! 5 day old chicks are pecking at vents!!

I'm not clear on what you mean by"pecking them with a stick." Broody hens as well as adult chickens in a flock will discipline juveniles by pecking them on the back with their beaks. You can simulate this by using your finger, but do it gently or you can knock a baby chick off its little feet. I and others have had very good success with this method, and it usually stops the troublesome behavior in just a couple days.

Sometimes the 'friendliest' chick is actually the most aggressive, and becomes a little monster, and/or a human aggressive cockrel. I hope your chick becomes a better flock mate, but time will tell. I don't think you can reform interspecies behaviors; are you there 24/7? It's not practical, IMO. Mary
