You are right, I didnt expect the hole to be so big.

To the OP, next time if this happens again, make the hole just small enough that you can see into the egg with a flashlight, if there are veins present leave it be, if not slowly open up more.

Just for my own information could you put saran wrap on the egg in a case like this or is it too air tight?

I wouldn't see why not, as long as the whole egg isn't covered completely, eggs need to breathe.

if you are going to peel off the tape be very careful you don't break more of the shell off.

you're going to have to hold the cling wrap on with something and you can't put it all over the egg because it has to breath.

I'd say no, the egg breathes through all the pours in the shell so you can't block the whole thing.
