Give it in a separate waterer, have plain water available too. You can mix up just a cup's worth with 1/8 tsp powder, needs to be made fresh each day. A soaked qtip held again side of beak is a safer way to give liquid to a bird that won't drink.

Poultry NutriDrench is a concentrated vitamin-mineral-amino acid product that can be given orally to help revive a weak chicken. Poultry Cell is very similar, but also contains riboflavin, which can be helpful in chicks with leg problems. These products are used in place of SaveAChick or other vitamins with electrolytes that are mixed in water. Dosage of either product is 1 ml for every 3 pounds of weight daily. Here is the label:

She needs to eat chicken feed as her primary food, but you can add water to some in a bowl, and sprinkle on a high protein treat, such as egg, tuna, salmon, or chopped meat in a small quantity. She also might eat better if she has an occaional visitor next to her cage.

We are planning on moving our new hens in with the older flock tonight. Then moving her (injured one) to the smaller coop on our back porch. Do you think I should keep one of the hens with her that she grew up with in the coop or keep her by herself? Won't the other hen peck on her injury and make it worse? Thanks for all your help.

Yes, the other hen would probably peck her wound, so I would just let another hen visit her through the cage. Once her wound heals a little, she probably could spend some time in her crate out in the coop or near the other birds.

Later when she heals some, a hen saddle might be a good way to cover the bare spot. A 7x9 or larger piece of polar fleec can be made into a one piece no-sew saddle. Two wing slits are made about 2.5 inches long, and the saddle is held on by the wings. You can lift it up to check her wound. Miracle she drink lots of aspirin water out of my hand 3 time this morn. Also ate egg mixed with tuna and water out of my hand and out off her bowel. After she eats she sleeps. Will update with some photos soon.

Here are some photos from day 2...the wound in not as red and inflamed looking . She fussed at us when cleaning her this time and pecked at our hands. Hopefully things are looking up. Not the best photos as she was not cooperating.. She got a bath in Hibaclens, spelling not right I am sure. Wrapped in towel asleep in my arms right now.

For 30+ years I have had all kinds of injuries to chickens. I IMMEDIATELY call the vet. He talks me through it & sets me up with antibiotics & salves to be picked up by me at my earliest convenience. Meanwhile the hurt birds recuperate in first floor bathtub. I actually had to sew one hens skin together (I only have an EMT license), because birds don't have skin attachments to hold the skin in place, like mammals/people do. She actually grew a new skin, complete with feathers & all, under the 8"x8" damaged skin & shed the old skin. It took about 3 months before she went back out, and when she did she let everyone know (chickens), in NO uncertain terms, she was back & don't mess with her. Chickens blow me out of the water all the time. Call the vet! ONLY FEED CHICKEN FOOD!!! They are not people they have special nutritional NEEDS. Call the vet!!!

I really appreciate your input and our vet was not open when all this went down, plus my mom in here late 70's and has doctored all of out animal as needed. I assure you we have acquired all necessary medications, salve would care sprays and more to help her. At this point all her skin looks good except the area where the hawk grabed her with his claw...1 puncture wound.
