one of my chickens combs just started to grow in (she looked beautiful!). i think the other chickens became jealous and tried to tear it off this morning. 1/4 of it is still attached correctly. the rest is hanging. i stopped the bleeding and put peroxide on her open wound. i brought her in my house and am keeping her in my large dog crate along with a quiet "special chicken" to keep her company. i am not sure what i should do next? should i cut the dangling piece off? or just leave it? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. my girls are almost 5 months old.

thanks, amy

That sounds horrible! I hope you get an answer soon from one of the more medically educated members. I think I would keep her confined, her wounds clean and use an antibiotic ointment. And keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't start getting infected or turning black. Then I would cut off the dead or infected tissue.

When my rooster did this to his comb, I couldn't keep it from bleeding. He would shake his head and it would start again. Plus the part hanging started to turn black. I just cut what was hanging off and it stopped bleeding almost immediately. It healed in just a day or two without any more treatment. Cutting it didn't seem to bother him at all.

thanks for the suggestion. since it was barely hanging on, i cut the dangling part with a pair of toe nail clippers. it was probably more traumatic for me than it was for her... she did not seem to mind. i stopped the bleeding with styptic powder. she is eating and drinking. i am hoping it stays closed up. do you know when i can put her back outside with her friends?

My leghorn tore her comb about 2/3 off. It bled, then dried up and was OK. I worried about it for a while because it looked pale like there was not enough blood flow or something, but it is red now. The only problem with it is that it looks like it hangs in front of her eye sometimes. I think it upsets me more than it does her.

I am no expert and have no medical knowledge, just this experience to share.
