I don't don't know, if not for bugs, I'd say it's just the natural course of things. As long as thy're still laying.

Mrs B.  Thanks sop much for the suggestions.  I will try to keep an eye out for what is happening.  They do have oyster shells available so I wouldn't expect it to me a protein deficiency, but it is sad to see the pretty hens starting to look so ragged.

Oyster shells provide calcium.

Your girls will need at least 16% protein in their feed. A commercial layer ration should have at least that. What kind of feed are you giving them?

Also, there is such a thing as a "feather mite" that causes chickens to go bald. Sevin dus all day long!
