help something attacked my baby chicks and ripped off their wings!!!!!! i don’t know what happened or what did it but they seem to have no other injuries, just missing a wing!!!! that’s happened last night and i put them in a dark brooder box in the house so they could calm down because they were really stressed out. now they are not in shock anymore and seem to be completely fine and eating and drinking and walking around. they do not look like they are in pain, and not being any more noisier than usual. i don’t know what to do. what should i give them medicine wise? am i gonna have to put them down if it gets infected? PLEASE help i have NO IDEA what i’m doing!!!! also, the first white chick has a bit dangling off by a very thin thread. should i cut it off or let it fall off?

Where and how are you keeping the chicks? Could this have been a rat or raccoon? Please describe your brooder. Wounds should be cleaned initially with Hibiclens (chlorhexidene) and water, or Betadine. Plain antibiotic ointment can be applied to the wounds twice a day. A vet would be your best chance of recovery. If there is bone exposed, there would be a better chance of bone infection. An antibiotic may be needed. Chickens can live without a wing, but Inwould try to get the chicks into a brooder or bring them inside for safety.

I had them free ranging with a mama hen that took care of them, and they have been outside and in the barn with her loose with no problems whatsoever for about 3 weeks. earlier that day their mama hen was taken by a hawk i believe. there was a huge curfuffle outside in my yard, and heard them screaming so i went out to check if everyone was ok and my lady was missing. everyone was hiding under bushes which leads me to suspect it was a predator from above, so a different predator from whatever attacked her babies later on. all the babies were ok at that point, and in the barn. they were huddled up in the nest they usually slept in. i left them there cause it was about 1 or 2pm and i was gonna put them in the other coop, which is completely predator proof, that evening once i was closing them in. unfortunately this was a very bad idea, i should’ve put them in the coop then, which i have been beating my self up about. when i went to close them just before the sun set, i walked into the babies huddled up with blood around them and in the barn. it’s not unlikely that we have rats, i’ve had issues with them before but thought we got rid of them. also have had raccoons around but never had any attacks.

Were the other chickens around them when the mother hen was taken? It is hard to know exactly what happened probably, but if the bones are exposed, the chicks could possibly die from infection. I would do what I could for them, and a vet would be best, but not always possible. Fish or pigeon antibiotics may be obtained online or from a vet. Clindamycin or cephalexin would be good for bone infection. First aid and keeping their wounds from being pecked by others is important to their healing. Let us know how they get along. Are the chicks in the house? Do you have possums? Could a rat get at them? I would bring them in until I figured out was was getting them. I kept my babies in the house on a table in a large pen a lot of kids put gerbils in. The cage is strong and no room for anything to get at them. It's hot here now but you can't keep them in air conditioning below 65 degrees. I wouldn't cut anything off until you talk with a vet. Hey I think I broke one of my 12 week old girl's leg. I'm calling a vet about it tomorrow and I feel awful. We have to read and ask questions and do what we're doing getting support. Hang in there.
