Hello,

We seem to be having an issue concerning the poop(?) of some of our 5 day old chicks. We ordered them online from a quality breeder, not a mass-hatchery like Tractor Supply or Agway.

All of a sudden, some of them (4 or 5 of them out of this batch of 22 chicks) seem to be pooping weird, long, stringy poops that don't look normal. We were thinking they could be intestines, however looking at images of intestines coming out of chicks it doesn't look like that- it's not bloody or anything- but it almost look like a piece of a small intestine or a small poop.

All of our chicks are getting Organic starter/grower food (and trust me, a constant supply of it!).

They seemed to be, for the most part, acting fine. Since we noticed this (within the last 2 hours) they just seem to be a little sleepy. Some of them are still eating and acting normal.

Two days before we got these guys, we had another brooder full of chicks , that are completely separate from these new ones who seem to be having the problem, (which we did get from Tractor Supply), and unfortunately, one of them died from coccidiosis. It didn't happen slowly and she definitely had bloody poop and was acting lethargic- all of the others from that box seem to be just as healthy as ever. This brooder, and the chicks have been kept completely from the box of new ones- we've been obsessive about it from the point of washing and sanitizing our hands in between touching each different chick.

And since we had the one die of coccidiosis, we have been introducing slowly everything natural that we can to build up the immunity of all of the other chicks (garlic, cinnamon, electrolytes oil of oregano, and Braags ACV). The brooder which had that one in it had been eating dirt, but we took that out once that one died.

We also have a separate brooder that we got before these new ones, and they seem to be totally fine.

Earlier today, in the batch of new chicks, we had one mysteriously drop dead while we were outside :(. That one did seem to have a little poop on it, but we don't even know whose poop it was. He died in the middle of the box, and shouldn't have been smothered.

A couple hours later, we have 5 chicks, all at the same time, seem to be pooping weird stringy poops. Now we're worried every poop that comes out is going to be intestines, and we have no way of knowing. It's in the middle of a night on a Sunday, so the vet is out of the question. One of the chicks having this problem seemed like she kind of stumbled earlier, and she is kind of sleepy in the corner now. We don't really know if she is acting normal or not because she is so young and it's normal for them to get sleepy sometimes.

We are completely freaking out.

This is horrible, someone please help!

Can you put a regular light on it so we can see it? The red brooder light is hard to really see what it looks like. Thanks

Wow, okay. Is it even possible for chicks that small to have that? That's crazy but thank you!

Is it possible Pau D'arco tea would help? It is anti-parasitic and it is in Kocci-Free (we don't have that right now, but we read today that it has Pau D'arco in it)... We don't have poultry wormer right now and every place is closed, so do you know if that would be worth a try? Or will they be ok until morning?

Some people have had chick get worms especially if they are organically feed because the worm eggs live in dirt. Did the chicks come from an organic farm?

I don't know that the hatchery itself is actually organic, but they are more towards a smaller farm deal than a widescale mass-hatchery...the older chickens there are definitely exposed to dirt. The chicks were sent to us a day old, so I don't think they would have had the chance to be in the dirt. Can chicks be born with roundworm?

Their food is Nature's Best organic.
