please help me house train this puppy **pics**UPDATED!

I have lots of experience with dogs becuz I'm a vet assistant (not to keep stating this, but I don't know whose read my posts or not)

Little dogs are much harder to potty train than bigger dogs.

Personally I would NOT waste my time walking her round and round! Some dogs don't like 'doing their personal business' on a leash. Since she's a small dog I would make her a Large SPACIOUS PEN out of sturdy rubber coated chicken wire or chainlink, etc and just let her run around in there. That way you can pooper scoop whenever you want and it won't matter if you forget a pile as its HER personal area and won't interfer with where the kids play. ANNND if she is slow on 'getting busy' you can just go back in and get on with your day instead of having to stare at her 'exit hole' wondering when she will make a touch down!

(don't worry I am also a 'butt-reader' I ALWAYS know when my dogs need to 'go' they cant fool me by pinching their pennies!) LOL

Leash exercise is really '''mentally'''' NOT enough for dogs, some crazy zainy zoom-around and run where they please time outdoors not tied to you- is very important when talking about behavoir and happines. Fencing her off would do this and make her a little happier and satisfied after being out (instead of being on the end of a leash being tugged in this direction and that, reminded to 'do her business'). Give her some freedom to 'be a dog' and she will be all set- she will find her 'favorite spot' in HER PEN

and she will be happy to be let out and 'go'. someone posted:
... if the dog's walk ends the minute it poops, it soon gets the idea to hang on to the poop to extend the length of the walk...

EXACTLY!!!

it will take some time to undo, but don't bring her in anymore directly after she poos, play with her- or if you make her a LARGE outdoor run it really will be easier for yoursel in the long run saving time time time! (I keep capitolizing size because a 4' X 4' square coral is NOT big enough. I HATE HATE HATE seeing dogs in these tiny square pens in the middle of 2 acres of yard. Its torture! People would'nt keep their kids in a baby playpen all their lives- don't do it to dogs...they need to RUN!!! they need to feel free)
hmm.png
(not saying this directly to YOU- just in general.

also I want to add that if she poos on the floor pick it up and put it on her pad. Leave it there a while (I know- stinky....p-U!) BUT she needs to associate the PAD with HER smell so she will keep going there. If you clean it up immediately she is not making the connection that it is HER spot.

Dogs just don't think or interperate as WE do- You really have to get inside their heads and try to relate to them. You are doing perfect with using baby gates and the crate. :)Any unwanted behaviors tryusing a squirt bottle (set to long distance spray) and quirt them in the head/face (NO THIS IS NOT CRUEL!!!! if people on here can speak of culling chickens the way they do then a little water in a dogs face is NOT cruel!!!!)

---if barking, pooing in a 'notty spot' then quirt her. This is usually 'negative' enough to surprise them and alert them to make them immediately stop. I have 4 big dogs...they like to bark at and pounce obnoxiously on company- All I have to do is pick up the quirt bottle and they cease.

Hope this helps.

Feel free to PM me.

hi there thanks for your suggestions...

when she does her poo we do not come back in the house...thats when we go for our walk cause I want her to learn that she go on a walk AFTER the business is looked after.

I think the fact that i am moving FAST when i see her squat in the house may give her the wrong idea like she is doing something wrong so I have tried to be a little more easy about getting her right outside.

I do use the water bottle when she is doing unwanted behaviors and it works great not so great when I am using the water bottle to wet DD's hair to put it up in the morning..and yes I use 2 different bottles but Abby does not care its water and its squirting

when she is going poo on her pad she WALKS...this dog will walk totally around the pad and at the moment of touch down she is no wear near the pad where she started out....

maybe it would be easier to litter train her....lol She already associates the litter box as an all you can eat buffet

I had a problem lab... So long story short I timed him after he ate. So if it took as a rule 3 hours to poo after he ate I would use the timer. Walk walk walk until he did poo. I had to stay outside in the rain with him. NOT just open the door and let him out. Rain, sun, snow we went together even at 3 am as a puppy. Now Luke is my best friend. LOVES me alot. It was bonding.....

Bronco has the right idea... Normally a dog will poo either right before or right after it eats. Mine it's usually first thing in the morning before they get to eat. Watch your dog to see which it is. And then make sure it does it's "business" before coming back in. No "business", back in the crate. 20-30 minutes.. try again. When the dog does it's "business" where it's supposed to.. go nuts! "what a good puppy! mommy loves you!".. you know lots of praise!

Now as far as barking in the crate, you need to stop that bad habit too. You are supposed to be the alpha dog, not the puppy. I usually give a stern "SHHHH!"

Ok sorry, somehow I locked my keyboard and couldn't figure out how to unlock it! Had to restart.

In any event, I use a "SSSSSHHHHHH IT!!!" and a finger shake at the crate. No rewarding for barking (i.e. letting out). This will work, but you have to be strong. When the puppy has been quiet for a couple of minutes, let it out right away, and give it some positive verbal reinforcement, "oh mommy's sweet boy! so quiet!".

Now this being said.. it will work unless your husband thinks it's cute that his frouffy little yorkie barks like a crazy woman when he comes home and he encourages it.... Once someone starts encouraging it.. the battle is lost. But when Daddy's not home.. Momma is the boss and she does listen.

the barking in the crate stopped as soon as i put the 2 dogs together in the same crate. I tried giving them separate crates in the beginning cause i have a ways separated my dogs cause one was a 120 lb dog and the 20 lb dog would be no match for her if they got into a tiff so I always gave them separate space...but when the 120lb dog died and we got abby i figured that the 20lb dog was used to her own space why mes with it.... well how wrong was I she wanted a snuggle partner and would not stop barking so when i put them together and the barking stopped ...1 problem down...

All I have to do is say "spray" and that puts a stop to the barking. Most times it only last a few seconds then we do spray. But I take it that he is learning what it means one day he will get it right

I want to add to the "pick up the poo and put it on the pad" thing.. That is a SUPER good point. I would scold the poo in the house NOT the dog. Bad POOP Bad POOP.. Then pick it up move it outside and put it in the correct area and then praise the poop their, GOOD POOP OH GOOD POOP as my puppy went crazy licking and hopping all over...
Im not crazy but my husband said I looked it...

Min pins are notoriously hard to house train.

I remember reading an article before on Min pins, the breed club presidents were given an award for having "the only house trained Min Pin in America". I know this is a joke and exaggerated but if the breed club would jokingly give this award you know you have one tough battle a head of you. Good luck.
