Please help me ID this chicken for my mom!

If you're looking for a place that sells Columbian Rock, Dunlap Hatchery in Caldwell Idaho has them. They are pretty rare, and hard to come by. Dunlap is a great hatchery, but be aware you have to buy chicks in large amounts.

The other negative, if you wanted them from there, is their hatching season is over, so you'd have to wait until next year.

Whatever it is, good luck finding one

I have to say--this was a nice chnage from the usual "what kind of chicken do I have" question. You should get that photo blown up to a large wall portrait size--11x14 at least. It is wonderful!

Thanks! WHat throws me off is her proud little tail... But that Columbian Rock is pretty spot on. I can wait til next year. I am done with incubators, heat lamps, and all that jazz for 2009!!!!

Oh- found a pict of the light sussex someone mentioned- wow- just like the columbian rock- maybe easier to find too.

I was looking up speckled sussex, and saw this and remembered your post.

I think it is a light sussex. It is true that I do not know that much about brahma's, but the sussex originated in Europe, and that would make sense then that they would/could be easily found in France around that time. Also, something about the way the tail is carried and the feathering/shape of the back up-to the tail. The two hens' shapes are quite similar, but I think the Sussex is a little closer to the one in the photo. Neat. I wish I had some pictures of my grandmothers chickens from germany. That would be Very cool!!! What an absolute treasure you have there!!!
