Please help me make a point to TSC.

Yesterday I went back to the store in Potsdam NY. They had an empty molding brooder with feces cemented to the ground where ducks had been. The shavings for the chicks were dirty. There was so much shaving in their waterer they couldn't drink. The food was dust/shavings and nearly empty. When I addressed with the staff she told me "I have chickens too, they just changed it" There was NO WAY they just changed it.
My response from TSC was:

"Each Tractor Supply store in which chicks are sold is in full compliance with the Rules and Regulations of (State) Department of Agriculture. Each store in the program operates under strict health and safety guidelines with respect to the housing, feeding and care of these animals.
Tractor Supply also offers our customers specific guidelines for the care of chicks they purchase during the Chick Days event. These guidelines are provided in literature at the store and are also available on an ongoing basis at www.TractorSupply.com/ChickDays."

I emailed back but I did not get a response.

I find your 1# post of this thread important, and shocking.
I never knew that the TSC did such things

. Here in SA we don't have chick days, but in pet shops chickens that are crowded into small cages together. I support this thread, and just found it.

I too believe in free commerce... and agree wholeheartedly that we do not want to lose more freedoms. That is why I simply choose not to go back to that store. I am the same way with everything. If I am not greeted right away when I'm ovbiously looking ot spend money and buy a item that may be big or up high or something that people tend to need help with (I.E. windows or sinks... carports is another one that a place lost me over) I just walk off and never come back. Slightly off topic, but I recently bought three carports I am converting (i need to go out and work on it now) into coops. I went to one place that had the best deal. I stood at the counter for 5 minutes (real minutes, not figure of speech - watched the clock), there was three people in the room doing nothing. Don't know if they worked there, hanging out or what. This place is a country u-haul rental (country is important... they may rent one truck a week, so they aren't busy) and carport sales... the one guy who was kinda behind the counter and the best guess for a employee, was falling alseep and drunk. The two sitting at a table in the corner were a bit young (24 or so) and texting and laughing about something someone did at the bar, and I could hear that there was someone else doing something in the next room. NO ONE said, "Hey, there are some people here." or "I don't work here, hold on a moment." or "Hello". So, after those 5 minutes of awkward silence, I walked out and took my buisness down the road. The man at the next place came to the car to greet us and ask us if we needed assistance learning more about the products. I said, "nope. I got you the easiest sale you ever had." We went in, did the order and it was that easy. Point is, that there is a real problem (at least in what I have seen) with employees caring anymore. Even managers tend to not really care. They don't care about anything whether it be caring for chicks or answering questions or even just simply being upfront and visible! They show up, clock in, and clock out as soon as they can. We need to all stop going back to a place that has crappy employees with crappy service. That is the way I see it.

And as for the undercover boss thing... I like that show, but I'm telling you... some of that stuff they have to know. For example the waste managment woman peeing in a can. He HAD to know they if they didn't let them vary from the route for breaks, they have to pee where they are. I mean, come on. You have to know that. That look on his face, to me, looked more like... "I'm going to catch h*ll for this now"

I don't like how TSC handles chick days from start to finish. First, open cattle troughs where just anyone can handle the chicks is horrible. Passing disease, little kids giving chicks internal injuries from squeezing, etc, all make it a big NO-NO for me. Secondly, the recent practice of taking personal information about the buyers in order to purchase chicks and telling folks that the State (I live at the juncture of GA, TN and NC, and they do not require that) requires this is ludicrous. It's a company policy, not the Dept of Ag policy like they're telling folks.

I walked into the brand new TSC in Murphy, NC the other day, prepared to have to instruct them on chick care, but fortunately, they didn't have any, thank goodness. I refuse to give TSC my business until they quit lying to the customers about the personal info thing (no more hatchery chicks for me anyway).

Heavens NO, It opens up the idea to people who never would of thought of it otherwise. I'm happy to say my chicks were an impulse.

Well, Cyn, I bought some (I know! The wrong thing to do) to save and a few others I just thought were odd. Saved some, lost three out of the 9 sick ones I bought up. They are in quarentine and the last ones I tend to. Anyways... point is... they didn't ask me for any info. They also didn't check how many I bought. I got a bunch and was honest, but I could have said "six" and got however many would fit.

Now, I'm wondering, what do I do with all these birds? The worst part, most of the sick ones that made it are bantams. Bantams are so pointless when your point is eggs and meat. But, no good deed goes unpunished.

So, anyone near East TN want some started chicks?

i didnt read threw this whole thread but, impulse buying 12 chicks, thats quite the undertaking, and they dont make any money on the chicks themselves its all in the needed supplies and feed. their chicks are actually not badly priced. i havent seen any bad care in our local tsc stores, maybe yours needs to be reported

nh state ag dept wants the info on buyers here.

chickn - seeing your avatar reminded me... why are we only talking about chicks? The rabbits at the TSC are just as bad off. The one in Lenior City, TN had one that been there so long it was grown. Now, you know that rabbit has never seen grass.

Poor Bunny! If I were closer I would go get the poor thing. I have a friend who got ducks from TSC, and she had ordered muskcovy's, she had to get a minumum of 25, and she would up with 25 chicks but 1 wasn't even a muskcovy (sp?) She gave the pekin duck to a neighbor, but about half of her muscovy's died. They were sent to her in a tiny box, with two airholes. she tried to save them but it was too late. I got my SLW chicks from Rural King, and they had a lot of them in troughs, but they weren't over crowded, and they were clean, well fed and hndled by the employees frequently. This is how I wound up with such sweeties. But I wouldn't have bought my chicks if they weren't so cheap. Mine were just getting big enough they could jump out of the trough brooder they had set up at the store. And I didn't want small enough ones that I would be afraid to hurt them. Mine were about 3 weeks old when I got them. They were "clearance" chicks I gotthem for $0.50 each. I'm just glad thay weren't over crowded, dirty and not taken care of. Anyone who mistreats any animal i my opinion atleast, should be taken out back and shot.
