Please help me & my chicken…

I have an ex battery hen that been suffering from water-belly ascites for 4/5 months - I’ve twice ‘drained’ her & she recovered well… Yesterday she wouldn’t stand up & I brought her into the conservatory- but she’s just getting worse & I can’t cope with watching her gasp/pant for air… what should I do??

Unfortunately the things that cause water belly tend to be untreatable and eventually fatal themselves. It may be that whatever is going on is getting worse. If she doesn't improve you might have to consider putting her down. Easiest method if you choose to go that route is the broomstick method

Basically you take a rod such as a broomstick put the chicken's head underneath it, hold the broomstick down with your feet and yank hard. The bird dies immediately with minimal stress. There are other ways to euthanize a bird, but that's one of the easiest ways

Oh gosh… I intuitively knew this morning she wouldn’t make it but I couldn’t give up on her & I suppose that’s selfish of me but I’m not sure I could do the ‘broomstick’ method, I wish there was a way of putting them to sleep…

There are ways, but usually those end up causing more suffering to the bird than other methods. Alternatively, if in the future you can't bring yourself to put down a bird yourself, many vets will put down a bird for you even if they don't see chickens. It certainly is the most expensive option but something to keep in mind just in case
