Please help me settle an argument

We have 7 people and 6 laying hens, getting 3-4 eggs per day, and could use a little more. Maybe 18 good layers for 7 kids? I plan on going to 18 so my parents can have fresh eggs too.

When my DH tries to argue a point like that with me I just look at him and say, "Why do you WANT to be wrong?"

And he writes it on the calendar when I am wrong. Nothing on the calendar yet this year.......hehehe

Sonia,

I think you will be a little unhappy with leghorns to start out with. They aren't the sweet birds most chickens are. A lot of stuff tends to upset them.

If you want really good layers that are a more easy going bird, I'd look at Red and Black Sex-links, RIR's, Barred Rocks. I love the Easter Eggers, the green eggs are cool.

My biggest mistake starting out, was I took whatever was available without studying out the breeds. I found that I really like variety in my coop. They are so fun to watch but I like lots of different colors. I'm starting to add different ones as I learn more about them.

I have a couple of Sliver Lace Wyandottes that I'm going to rehome soon. They get picked on by the other chickens, they are really flighty farely poor layers and they make a lot of noise.

You will learn lots about chicken with time. Find out what you like what you don't like. But I'd try out several different breeds before sticking with just one.

On rare occasions there are vicious roos who can injure hens. Their spurs can do some damage, as anyone who has tussled with a roo knows!
However, this is very rare; most roos are so protective of their girls it melts your heart! My roo always let his girls eat first, brought them special treats, made sure they got in to the coop at night, and protected them fiercely from any threats.
