Please Help my bird

Well if it was just the wound I'd be more optimistic, but he may have broken his back since his motor function hasn't improved whatsoever...he is in high spirits and acts fine other than his physical issues.

I am more than willing to work on him but a couple weeks ago I had a terrible coon problem that put some pretty horrific injuries on my chickens (one leg completely missing with maggots the other's head was literally scalped). I tried to save them with antibiotics & tlc but they ended up dying. I just hate it when helping doesn't cure & they die anyway, then I feel like they were in misery longer than they should've been...then if I eithenize I have regrets as to "what if they could've pulled through."

Ugh what a tough decision I have to make!

Been there, do what you think is the best for both you and him.

Treating my turkey surely was not easy and if my son hadn't been crying over her, I probably would have let hubby end it.

I think I'm going to bring him in after the fiancé gets here so I can look at the wound more...I don't think it's as big as a problem than him not being able to walk, he can only lay on his side. He does have feeling in his legs but it's like he's drunk...

It's between his legs towards his bottom, I thought yesterday he just had poop stuck to his butt where he had been lying on his side. But now it smells real bad & has fly eggs in the down, I haven't actually seen the wound. Maybe the flies Re just attracted to his setting poop? There may not be a wound at all the more I think on it...

It's possible that he has a fly strike sore from lying in his poop. Don't get me wrong, not criticizing you, just saying it's a possibility as I have seen that in a few of my sick ones. If not treated, it will most likely lead to death.

If you decide to try, the first order of business is to get him cleaned up & treat if a wound. I would go with Kathy and treat for cocci & extra vitamins just in case. You might want to sling him, it will keep him out of his poop, allow him access to food & water, and hopefully take some pressure off. As long as he's alert & trying, I (without seeing him) would tend to think its more swelling putting pressure on nerves than a broken back. You might look on line or maybe someone on here knows if a pea can be given aspirin, or another anti-inflammatory. Good luck with him, I hope it works out for you.

That's what my fiancé said (about him being too mobile/alert) to have a broken back, but we're neither experts!

Good news, there's no wound.

Bad news, I've never seen so many clusters of fly eggs before. I brought him in the bathtub & rinsed the best I could but those eggs were really attached...now what?

This sounds like promising, good news.
He may just need some time and care to recover from his injury or impact.
I'm sure you will get some excellent advice!
In the meantime, keep him inside away from those pesky flies and see if he might eat or drink? Will he eat from your hand?
