Please help my hen has an egg outside her body but trapped by membrane

Thank you all.. Josie continues to do well. Eating, drinking, socializing with the others.. I limited her light for the first week.. We had the shortest day of the year on Dec 21 st.. So I believe she is getting just under 8 hours of light right now .. No egg laid yet.. Yippie! Should I be limiting her to less? Yikes.. She is a bit of a rebel at heart and hates to be confined .. I could limit her... I just thought she was getting better and the light was getting less and less... What do you think? Merry Christmas and blessings to you all! Xoxo

I'm glad your girl is doing well. I'm still new to chickens, but I read that hens need at least 14 hours of sunlight a day to sustain egg production. You are well under that so you might be ok. The exception to the 14 hours, I believe, are pullets who have just begun to lay and can sustain egg production through the first winter despite less daylight. I've experienced that with my own pullets. Although your girl fits into this category, her egg laying cycle has been interrupted so she might not start up again until the days begin getting longer. I don't know this for sure, though. Maybe someone with more experience can comment on this? I've also read that isolating a chicken for too long can be stressful, and might result in reintegration problems when you try to return her to the flock. I'd be tempted to return her to the flock and keep a close eye on her. I'm hoping others with more experience will comment. Good luck to you and Josie

the vet told me only 4-6 hrs a day. it was for 3 or 4 weeks cause i was thinking oh my i hate to do that to her. i did spend alot of time with her while she was on lock down. i kept her in a BIG card board box with a roost in it. it was grand. she did fine with me visiting her. mind you i did HATE it but i love my little hen. now she is through sll that. i would let her outside and just bring her back in. i didnt do exactly as the vet said. i didnt do it quite as long as he said to. maybe a week less than what he suggested. i just dont want it to happen again to you like it did me. my rosey is the head honcho of the flock i just have the 3 hens. sooooooooooooooo glad she is doing good. arent you glad you waited.

Thanks for all the great advice.. I keep her in for a little bit of the morning and then let her out in the afternoon to join the flock. She has not laid an egg yet and seems to be otherwise very happy and healthy.. She truly is a Christmas Miracle. I am so happy for you all and for Josie! Blessings to you - in all things great and small! xoxo

That chicken wouldn't be somehow related to Josie Wells - would it? - the guy in the Clin Eastwood movie -

Sounds like you're doing the right thing. I was going to suggest keeping her in the dark

As for food, try giving her a little natural yogurt, or oatmeal - or both mixed together. Make sure she has access to fresh water. I hope she pulls through for you!

Please let us know how she does.
