Please Help! Puffy Cheeks in a Barred Rock?

No cheesy plug. The bumps are rock hard though. They don't seem to pain her and she's otherwise totally fine. Eating, drinking, pecking around all over the place. Never good if no one's ever seen it!

She has been vaccinated against Marek's but you're right. The eye color is the same as on the link. It does also talk about tumors or hard bumps. Not sure they'd be uniform though.

Yes, that is her actual eye color. Not just the lighting. Her eyes have always been a grey blue. These are my first chicks so I never thought anything of it.

Read up on the eye worm but I don't see any other similarities other than that it involves the eye. Ug!

I'm glad to hear she's been vaccinated. I wish you the best, but if Speckledhen doesn't know, I sure don't. I'm curious about this one tho. I've never seen anything like it either and the only straw I can grasp is maybe a sinus infection? ... I just don't know.

I would watch it to see if it gets bigger. OR (what i would do) it i would open it up. Ask somone first since im not expert.

Thanks Chew! I've been busy reading about Ocular Marek's though. I have found some sites that say some chicks will have grey blue eyes until they get older. I hope that is all it is and not Marek's.

I realize I didn't answer Tulie's question - I'm in Northern California, the San Francisco Bay Area. Not tropical here.

If anyone else has any ideas, I'm all ears. Seems to quick to be a tumor or cyst but what do I know. And could it be Marek's??

Thank you, rcenter. I can't find anything either that fits directly. Maybe it is the Maerk's. Going to see a chicken vet tomorrow afternoon. Appreciate everyone's advice.

Thanks. I will. I've actually got another chick that ended up with an impacted crop (or at least a really squishy one). I'm following all the advice here on BYC but as I'm going to the chicken vet, I might as well bring both. Will report back.

If you don't have ready access to a chicken vet, you could probably get a good opinion from a poultry specialist at one of your universities if they have an Agricultural program. I sent photos to a Dr. at the Univ. of FL, and that's how I got my confirmation of coccidiosis plus a secondary clostridium infection (necroscopy pictures). Good luck, and let us know what you find out!
