Please help, sick NH Red Rooster chick

Sorry about that, trying to answer different threads. If everything else looks normal then I'd say you've hit it right and the vitamins should work. ACV doesn't have any benefits beyond the crop, where it's acid is neutrilized. I always tell people to find out the PH of their water before giving it to them. If your PH is normally around a 7.0, then it shouldn't hurt but if your wate is 6.0 or below...now you are asking for problems. Right now I will leave it to you to do the investigating on the subject. There's a lot of good science against it but I know as well that for certain things, ACV can be a big help for short periods of time.

I would continue with the vitamins, but as Chooks4Life points out, this could be more. If after 3-4 days your bird isn't showing marked improvement, You could start adding a Super B Complex to it's water. Just get the human pills and break/cut one into 4 pieces and add 1 piece to 1 qt. of water. If you're using gallon waters, just crush up the pill and mix it in. This has vitamins C abd the Bs. All water soluble so no worry about overdosing. While giving this please stop and ACV. Continuing to give this with the C in the pill will overload the system and could make it's system more alkaline than you want. Vitamin C works to acidify the 'whole' digestive track, not just the crop and is added by large poultry growers to keep their water clean and also to acidify the birds systems to stave off illness. The B Complex could help if this is something caused by inbreeding or genetics. Sometimes it's an inability to absorbe the needed vitamins readily, so most will just pass through rather than used. You up the amount available and it's chances increase to get what it needs.
So then is all this talk of making up fermented food with acv just a bunch of bull as well? Or does that benefit them further than the crop?

No...fermented feed is different. The ACV you use for that is actually the yeast that makes it ferment. This is a good thing, but plain ACV in water, not so much.

Look, anything fermented, in the right way, is good, lol. I make my own wine and beer. I could take the leavings and use it for feed for my birds and have in the past. Oh yeah...they liked it. More of a raw ferment than what you are doing with the feed but whether anyone knows this or not, there is an alcohol element to this ferment. Yeast, corn in the feed, which is the sugar that feeds the yeast, makes alcohol. Not enough to worry about but it's there and good for the birds.

Yes, I am aware that they use the ACV with the "Mother" or unpasteurized ACV for fermented feed applications but I have also read that they will ad some to the water as well, that was what I did, so now I am confused as to whether it's beneficial or not. I freshened his water and didn't add ACV just an electrolyte mix.

I don't use the ACV in the water. I've tried it and ended up with problems.

Quote: Unpasteurized ACV gives the whole body the correct PH, and contains vitamins, minerals, and pectin among other beneficial stuff. An acidic PH encourages and allows cancer among other problems, and prevents their healing; it's proven to be a big factor to blame in the deaths of humans from all sorts of diseases. But not all ACVs are created equal. ;)

I've used ACV in the water regularly with benefits being immediately noticeable, and I ferment the feed often (though mine is fermented differently... I just wet it with filtered tank water/rain water and let the ingredients of the mix do their own thing, and feed it to them immediately or after an overnight sit. The chooks often bury it to ferment and then eat it the next day or week, lol)...

Having said that I don't use Bragg's ACV, as I've found it useless to me, I use Melrose and one other brand, I forget the name though...

Well good news, the chick is showing drastic improvement. He is now walking normally and eating on his own and doesn't tuck his head under anymore though he still isn't stretching his neck out too far and it is still crooked to the left, hopefully he will keep improving.

Asyou cansee, there are differing opinions about using ACV in the water. I like to use it, but while your chick is on medicines, it's probably best to skip it. Selenium is another vitamin that is recommended for wry neck (and I think you are correct in the diagnosis.)

I am glad to hear this.

Well, he seems mostly back to normal, his neck does still seem to favor to the left ever so slightly but he is back to normal and even more energetic than before, he won't hardly let us pick him up now. We treated him with vitamin E squeezed from pills and poly vi sol, I didn't have any selenium or vitamin B complex, after reading about all the treatments I didn't think it would work as I didn't have the selenium and vit B but it did work and my chick was very bad off he was completely turned upside down walking backward and stumbling around, hopefully this gives hope to others dealing with this ailment.
