Please help! Sick silkie and seems to be progressing quick! What should I do?

I didnt see this post until just now. I havent ordered anything yet because I didnt know what I should go for. So buy what you suggested in your first post?
I would not switch medication until you get some input from some the experts on this forum,i respect the advice of Casportpony,Dawg53,Realisis,Haunted55 and Eggcessive,PM anyone of them and see what they suggest. I have not had any serious illness,so i cannot advise on what other medication to try,i am only familiar with Baytril,Tylan and Tetracycline.

War chicken, so how would one give the proper dose of cipro to a small chicken (10-40mg/kg). 'Cause the pills are 250 and 500, right?

You can grind up one pill, add it to some water, and create your own Baytril solution equivalent. See:

You definitely need doxycycline for atypical pneumonia (Mycoplasma and friends). Then a broad spectrum antibiotic, your choice of a fluoroquinolone such as Baytril or ciprofloxacin or Augmentin (amoxicillin + clavulanate).

Any chance this gapeworm?? I have not experienced it myself but some of the symptoms sound like it?

I'm participating in too many threads and starting to get them mixed up but if this was the one where no obvious mucus in the mouth was found then gapeworm should be moved up the list of possible culprits. A tube of Quest Plus (also available on eBay) will take care of pretty much all worms and mites in all your chickens.

Ciprofloxacin is just a cheaper, more readily-available form of Baytril (it's turned into ciprofloxacin by the liver). Doxycycline is a tetracycline but has far fewer problems being inactivated by calcium or food in the digestive tract. There's so much resistance to the other tetracyclines that they can't be relied upon.

Ok I will do that.

To be completely honest, I am getting overwhelmed, confused and stressed over all this medication. Not only have a driven hours and spent almost 100 dollars already towards getting her better, but she has had her fair share of different medication too. I am young and dont exactly have a lot of money to spend, I hate to say, but unless someone tells me that I SHOULD switch again, specifically why I should change because I thought Tylan was one of the best for respiratory issues, EXACTLY what I need to get and EXACTLY how to administer that exact amount..... I do not feel comfortable change medicines again. I understand they are good to have in the future but I would rather wait because I have spent so much this week already if she DOESNT need these asap.

I do not know what can be mixed and what can be dangerous to combine so I just want to double check that everything I am doing is SAFE and enough for her.

What I am doing currently for her:

-Syringe feeding her water with Corid and Duramycin as often as I can
-Gave her 1 dose of Tylan200. A little less than .25 CC into the neck/back just below the skin
-2 drops of polyvisol withouth iron a day
-Small amounts of yolk/water mixture a couple times a day
*Such small amounts and watered down or else she throws it up/sneezes it out
-Saline solution, 1 drop per eye; twice a day
-NO electrolytes because of the duramycin

Would VetRX be beneficial to help her breath?

I apologize again for responding without seeing your response. Sounds like I heard what I needed

So if I ordered Ciprofloxacin and Doxycycline, That would be a good choice?

And Tylan cant be used in place of either of those?

Sorry if I am coming off rude, I am just trying to be as clear and precise with everything I say because I understand you guys help a lot of people on here and just want to be on the same page. I have had so much go wrong already, I want to make this as smooth as possible!

I feel you are mixing too many medications together, more is not always a good thing, can have negative affects, this might be one reason she is throwing up her food. Stop the Corid(treats Coccidiosis only, and will not even work for Cocci if giving vitamins)stop the Duramycin, wait for the Tylan to work,IF no improvement, then think about other medications.

Ok, that was my concern. I know someone mentioned that the tylan can be used with the duramycin at one point. That is why I am getting confused, its hard to go back and find everything mentioned to double check. And I am nervous to stop the duramycin because I am not 100% she received the Tylan or all of it because she moved on me right when I was pushing it in. I stopped the Corid.

I am starting to notice white cloudy mucous in her mouth.

I did do a swab of her throat a couple days ago and saw no worms or mucous but I am not sure if I got as far back as I am suppose to

Baytril(fluoroquinolone class drug) - generic name is ciprofloxacin is bacteriocidal(kills bacteria) Doxycycline(tetracycline class drug) is bacteriostatic(inhibit the growth of bacteria).

My understanding of drug classifications is that you should not mix a bacteriocidal with bacteriostatic drug as they may cancel each other out, reason is if you are using a bacteriostatic then the bacteria is growing slow or has stopped therefore a bacteriocidal will not be effective in killing the bacteria. I would not recommend using Cipro with Doxycycline,as they may not work together. I would suggest one or the other,Baytril(bacteriocidal) or Tylan(bacteriostatic)there is no point in ordering drugs that will not work in combination with each other.

I see your point, both Duramycin and Tylan are both bacteriostatic so in theory will work together, due to the fact that you are not sure she received the Tylan then perhaps continuing with the Duramycin may be a good choice.

White cloudy mucus as in liquid or is it white on her tongue/mouth if white on tongue/mouth may be a result of thrush(yeast) which could be from issues with her crop. At one point i believe you mentioned that her crop was squishy and i was concerned about sour crop, keep an eye on crop.

In my opinion you're getting advised of using way too many antibiotics at once. Stick with either Tylan or Duramycin and give it a chance to work...7 to 10 days minimum. Let her out as much as possible with the water bowls or let a hose run so she will drink. I'd discontinue the Corid also.

Just to be clear, I'm not suggesting using multiple drugs. Baytril (enrofloxacin), is very effective and very easy to dose any size bird correctly.
