Hello

We have hatched 12 runner ducklings in the last 48 hours. I came down this morning and 1 had died and two were near it at the far end of the brooder away from the lamp really cold and shallowly breathing. I tried to warm them both up but sadly they both died. I’ve now made the brooder ‘smaller’. Have I made the mistake of a big brooder with a cold area and they have become to cold and died or is there something else I’ve done wrong? I’m terrified for the others.

Many thanks

Anne

Just for information. They are on bathroom towels that are changed every day. Niacin in their water. And crumb.

We’ve just lost another one. Does anyone have any ideas please?

Are you getting a cold draft around the brooder, if so, stop the draft. Check the temp on the towel since that's the lowest point above the lamp or heat lamp, if needed adjust it. That might help.

Zero draft is preferred for any babies.

Thank you. I’ll check the towel temperature again. It’s in my dining room with double glazing and the door closed. The house is at 18-19 degress C so not cold? The run has wooden blanked out sides. I think the lamp may have been too low maybe? But the brooder is big and plenty of space to move away. I found the first three at the cooler end. i am so stuck what to do. Thank you for trying to help. In the picture is the corner where the lamp is the warmest and where they are choosing to sit. We’ve had 2 week old ducklings before, quail, chicks and raised them in an out building no bother. My intention was to keep these little guys inside until they were a month/six weeks old. I just don’t know what I’ve done wrong to kill them like this. It’s heart breaking.

apologies I meant the corner is the hottest part and they are sitting a little away from it. I have raised the lamp this morning
