Please Help, Venus has a huge lump between her legs.

Kim Sorry to hear about Venus. Maybe Ruth will be able to help. I hope so. I think she waited a few weeks before she 'performed the operation' so hopefully you will have some time to see how it progress's.

Thank you so much!!!! I'm baffled in what it is. The lump is big and a little squishy.

I bought the RIR b/c of their productive reputation, but I did lose one this past fall of internal laying. I don't know if RIR's are typically internal layers are not.

Thanks for the hugs & good wishes, b/c I need it.

Thank you so much, Kris. I hope Ruth can shed some light to.

She has an appetite. She's making her happy clucking noise and eating right now making a huge mess all over my breakfast room floor. She was getting bored hanging out in the quiet basement by herself, so I know she is feeling better.

Mrs. AK-Bird-Brain :

Can you separate her to see if she's still laying?

I've had her separated from the flock since Sun night in hopes she would have popped one out by now, but nada!

She is still inside, but getting antsy. Obviously she is feeling much better, but still has a big lump.

I guess it feels medium. It's not hard. The skin feels firm b/c it's stretched. I can cup my hand around the lump and squeeze it, but not quite as squishy as a water balloon.

Hmmm. I have a hen who built up fluids and needed drained.
But she definitely felt like a waterballoon. Not sure what it could be but I hope she recovers!

Thank you so much. I can't tell if it is fluid built up needing to be drained, tumor, or internal layer. I'm scared to poke a needle in her to drain unless I knew it was that for sure. Thanks so much for your input.

Unless under the guidance and or recommendation of a vet who has examined the bird, I would never suggest self puncturing an abcess. My brother just did that to his best walker dog who was not quite 2 years old - she apparently ran into something on a night hunt and her heard her yelping - she abcessed on the base of her neck - he punctured it and it drained a lot of blood and she died 2 days later.

LaskaLand... hatchery Reds are indeed prone to that. I've seen so many RIR and Production Reds with that. I think it's more likely to occur in heavy breeds.

Smitty... it's fatty on my hen too. I believe it's putting pressure on her oviduct because she lays misshapen eggs. Other than that... healthy as a mule. I don't think it's internal laying, it seems too spherical. I would expect a hen with internal laying to simply swell evenly as it would be filling the empty spaces in the body cavity. As long as it doesn't get any larger, she'll be totally fine. Just watch her carefully for the next couple of weeks.
