Please help with sick peacock

Well you guys have had a lot more experience with sick birds than I have, and I sure don't want to give bad advice.

Here's what I'm thinking, FWIW:

I keep asking about poop, because it doesn't sound like the bird ever got treated for coccidia, and there could conceivably still be worms as well. Those things, if present, would make it harder for the bird to recover.

Continuing on Tylan sounds sensible, but I am personally fearful of giving Tylan as an injection due to the concern over tissue damage. And that bird is still very small. But it's something to consider, for sure.

I don't know if Baytril might work in this bird, no way to know if it has the same disease organism or if the organism has same susceptibility as KsKingBee's bird... A round of Baytril might be worth a try?

I also think it is important to ask if the bird is gaining weight at this point? As an indicator of whether it may be recovering? It sounds like it is doing better, overall.

So maybe continuing the Tylan orally for another five days would make sense, to see if that gives complete relief. If not, then perhaps the Baytril, or gritting the teeth and trying the injections?

Meanwhile, figuring out whether to treat again for worms or dose for coccidia.... and I don't know, can she give those treatments while also continuing the orally dosing with the Tylan?

Shay, she is getting better right? She is just not totally cured yet. Continue with what you have been doing until she is well even if it takes two weeks. Mine took almost two weeks of injections before it quit gasping and coughing. I actually had two doing it, the other got better in about a week. I know there is a risk with toxicity but she needs to get better so keep doing what it takes to get her well. If I am wrong and you lose her I will give you an IB hen chick. I think she just needs to stay the course to get better.

Can you buy some Tylan 200 and use it instead of the 50? With the 200 you would use much less, which might be better. And can you get a scale so you can weigh her? @KsKingBee , did you do the shot in the muscle or under the skin? @Shay1Bear , I can take pictures of both ways and teach you.

I tried to give under the skin but sometimes it went into the muscle. I did keep changing the location though.

Kathy, have you seen anything about whether the 50 or the 200, and which one, causes the tissue damage? Is there a correlation between either the strength of the medicine, or the overall volume of the dose in the accounts of damage? It sounds from what I have read that under the skin is less likely to cause damage, but I can't say that with any certainty.

I think the bird that was paralyzed had the injection given to close to the spine like the picture on the left shows:

I absolutely agree with that, I have been thinking the very same thing. But I have been reading periodically for a long time about tissue damage from Tylan injections, even when given "correctly," not just the damage in that one bird... I think KsKingBee was super smart to keep changing the injection site and to go under the skin when he could... I was wondering which strength would be less likely to cause damage, if anyone knows.... I can see it two ways... a smaller volume of meds might be easier on the bird and cause less damage, OR a higher concentration might cause more damage??? And I don't know which it is, or if the concentration matters with respect to the possibility of tissue damage.... Does anyone know?

Now I'm seriously considering adding a golden to my chickens, just reading these great treatment posts and peahen/peacock owners and their birds
