I’ll checkI am not familiar with cranes.Are you sure this is not a normal thing for them?Can you check the other crane to see if they have this?Do you think it is attached?

The first time I saw the Choanal slit in my chickens mouth open like that, I swore she had a cleft palate ..Just had to check the other chickens too, they all had it, shows more when you pull the head back, otherwise, just don't really notice it.This is what a choanal slit should look like:
