Hi all,
I’m new to keeping chickens I hve 3 speckled Sussex and 3 silkies. Last week I adopted a 3 year old Rhode Island Red introduced her slowly spending limited time with my other 6 chickens. How ever on checking on my chickens tonight I’ve noticed this on my silkies neck! 😢.
The Rhode Island Red does peck at the smaller ones but I dident realise it was this bad 😢.
What can I do for this poor chick? and is there anyway I can stop the Rhode Island Red from doing this is to the chicks?

This happened to one of my chickens once. She had a huge hole pecked in her side.
Just clean the wound with some warm water, and disinfect it with some neosporin. Then put some pine tar on the wound. Chickens hate the taste, she won't get pecked anymore.

You might use betadine and triple antibiotic ointment. And keep the RIR separated from your Silkies.

How old are your Sussex and Silkies? Were they raised together? Most other chickens do not accept/recognize Silkies or Polish as chickens if they are not raised together from the start. And RIR are known to be quite fierce anyway.

Hi I think it’s the the 3 year old Rhodes Island red which is causing the issues. There is is 4 weeks between the silkies and Sussex and up until this week I have had no issues they all snuggle together but since introducing the bigger chicken they are scared and keep there distance I have spotted her pecking at the chicks

They are much too young to be with the adult chicken. Keep them well separated from the RIR or she will rip them apart.

How old are the Sussex and Silkies in weeks or months?
