I have had a hen that had Bumble for a while, so today I went in to cut the skin to get the puss out. There was a lot of blood but no puss. Is this normal? Now she seems alert but she is sleeping. Did I wrap it to tight? How do I know? Please help!! If I did wrap it to tight what would happen? Would she be making lots of noise? Is this normal? What does it mean that there was no puss? Please help!!

Thought I would add I did not use prid drawing salve, is that okay? Did I hurt her for no reason? There was also no hole.

Wrapping a bandage too tight can cause the chicken to lose the foot. If you are in any doubt, leave the bandage off. But you need to keep the wound clean so wash it every day and use the Neosporin. It will stop bacteria from growing. The other stuff won't.

If you cut into the foot looking for pus, that was probably not the best way to do it. Sometimes you run into the wrong information here. Or sometimes you don't understand the right information, and mistakes are made.

The proper way to treat bumblefoot often involves not slicing into the foot. Soak for twenty minutes to soften the black bumble scab, then simply scrape it off with your thumbnail. The solid pus plug usually comes off with the scab. If your chicken did not have a thick black scab, it was probably not bumblefoot.
