Hi. I am new to BYC, and really need help. I ordered both chicks (McMurrays, arrived on Sunday) and ducks (Metzers, arrived on Wednesday). Two of the ducks arrived dead. By Wednesday night, one duckling was weak. By Thursday AM, she was weaker and was pooping blood. By the time the vet could see them on Thursday afternoon, three more ducks were weak and lethargic. Vet did a fecal smear. Could not confirm coccidia, but treated as if it was. Gave all 10 ducks Albon twice daily. The weakest of the ducks died yesterday. She just never got better - it was heartbreaking. She was so weak that she couldn't hold her head up. The other three who had been weak seem to be doing better - they are eating and drinking, and they seem to have more energy.

This morning, one of the chicks was very weak. The chicks and ducks are in separate brooders, but all the brooders are in our guest room. She had what appeared to be thin white poop. She would drink, but not eat. I separated her from the other chicks. I went ahead and gave her Albon. She has had two doses now. She has had one more poop. It is thin and greenish. She continues to be very lethargic. She just stands there with her eyes half closed. I feel terrible! I don't know what is wrong or how to help her. I am afraid that she is going to die.

I am also concerned for the other chicks. I am worried that they have been exposed to something, and will also get sick. I don't know if I should start them on a profilactic antibiotic in their water such as amprol. I have read opinions about the dangers of giving antibiotics when they are not needed - that this can cause even more problems down the road.

Any guidance would be appreciated. Last time, we raised all 30 chicks with no problems. I am not sure what I am doing wrong and what I need to do to save my birds. Thank you all.

Hi &

, I am so sorry for your losses. Have you tried giving the chicks Sav-A-Chick or children's Poly-vi-sol vitamines ? I would try to get them to eat some plain regular yogurt mixed with chick feed. I hope the rest of the little ones pull through and recover.

I haven't given any vitamins - just using Quik Chick (an electrolyte supplement) in their water. I will try the vitamins and also the yogurt. Thank you!
