Will cull if chicks hatch with obvious deformaties.

You've got a lot more guts than me! I am such a big wimp when it comes to animals, the only reason I agreed to incubate last summer, is because my hubby said he would take care of any culling that might be necessary. I'd build 'em wheelchairs and push them around the house.

If I really though that I'd end up with a bunch of cripples I wouldn't do it, cause like you, I do try to save 'em all. Remember, I am the one that tried three differerent times to save the ones from the feedstore that had slipped tendon. I also do crazy things like tube feed 3 day old mutt chicken chicks that can't walk or eat, so I'm really not a cold hearted monster, lol.

You can use one generation like brother and sister but using the same male through the entire blood line will cause some problems. Got to remember any male will breed any female most likely not caring who it is may it be their parents or siblings. It's just best to keep variety in the blood line. Got to remember most animal varieties come from inbreeding and then getting some new blood but they just use brothers and sisters not grandfather to granddaughter which sounds very disgusting but breeding brothers to sisters is the only inbreeding I would ever do it's just an option but variety of blood line is best.

I never for a moment thought you were cold hearted! I've seen just how untrue that is by reading through the threads on here. I also know that a brother to sister mating doesn't guarantee birth defects. I'm quite sure my first pair were a brother and sister, although the guy who sold them to me swore they were not, they produced chicks for many years with no physical problems at all. I just thought it was unusual to do it purposefully, although I guess that is how most new colors are created. I had a white guinea with an advanced case of twisted tibia, I was seriously going to keep her even though she couldn't walk at all, I would shampoo her every few days because she got so dirty flopping around outside w/ her uncrippled brothers. Even though I knew how ridiculous I was being, I couldn't bring myself to put her down, my neighbor's flock of chickens actually took the decision out of my hands and killed her one day, horrible as it sounds when I was finished crying I was relieved. I raise orphaned pigeons every year as well as just about anything else that finds it's way here.

I know you didn't think that, but other people might, so I thought I should try to make it clear. And I know what it's like to feel the relief when they pass... Sort of strange, isn't it? Sorry about your guinea. :(

I know this isn't peafowl but the very best breeding ever done in the Working-Show class lines of German Shepherds that took place in Germany many years ago was by a mother bred to her son,,the famous "F" LITTER by the Wienereau kennel. Three of the pups became VA's in the showring. Fanto became VA-1 and there is no show rating higher in the world in German Shepherds than VA-1. Breeders seldom talk about close inbreeding but just like in other species you greatly narrow the possible "faults" by breeding closely. Outcrossing introduces many unforeseen genetics.East as well as West Germany German Shepherds both can be traced to only 4 bloodlines. Each of the chosen 4 lines still going today in the east, and West has certain attributes. One has strong drives, the other has proven great hip scores, one has excellent showring confirmation, and the last has strong inherited instincts. In the beginning brothers was bred to sisters, mothers to sons, sires to daughters, ect. Thinking back to Noah's ark,,wasn't that considered inbreeding since these few groups populated the earth?

You're absolutely right. But you don't want to use the same male through the entire family. Keeping it within one generation is safest when inbreeding. But of course the best is keeping variety. When inbreeding best option would be brother and sister in my opinion. Best option would be variety between the blood lines.

Best breeding is father to daughter and mother to son. Each siblings offspring would be 3/4 to 1/4 ratio. The 1/4 ratio(25%) is almost buried coming from the unused parent of the sibling. Full sister to full brother is using identical blood,so to speak. Little variance produces few,if any changes.
