Oh Suebee! I can't believe it. Another one??? Same symptoms??

Mine little girl wasn't having a great day today. The weather has turned a bit colder and I'm wondering if that is effecting her more. I would find her poofed up in the sun every time the sun moved! I'll check in tomorrow morning and see how everyone is....

I move to AZ a couple of years ago from a small town in CO. There was a doctor living just outside of town on a farm, who worked part time at a low income clinic in a larger town about 20 miles away. She kept her surgical and emergency skills in practice by working on neighbors farm animals and pets that had been injured. It would be nice if there were someone like that in your area.

Please....is there anyone online??? oh my god....

I went to check on my hen this afternoon....the cool weather has been bothering her the last couple of days and she had slowed down some...but today it is nice and warm. I couldn't find her anywhere...I finally found her with her head hidden behind the garbage can (where I keep their scratch)...and there were flies absolutely everywhere around her. I ran to the house and got out her "tub" and filled it with warm water and a bit of dish washing soap. I put on gloves and brought her up to soak. All these dead flies started coming to the surface...obviously having drown. Then I spotted white worm like creatures...some larger than others squirming in the water...omg they are coming out of her like crazy...I can't count!!!!! My kids are trying to help me. We're all trying to stay calm....

I dumped the water and we've started again....when I tried to look her over I noticed that they are coming in and out of her vent (or whatever the correct terminology is for a chicken). What is it??? What the heck do I do!!!! I hope someone can help me!!!!

Lusty I am so sorry I just got on and yours was the first post I checked. I sure wish I could of helped you. It sounds like she was full of maggots. Hope someone comes on and can say more than Sorry to you.

I really am sorry.

Oh Lusty, Sorry this happened. You did the BEST you could. You made her as comfortable as possible during her illness, which I KNOW made a difference to her. (((hugs)))

I don't know how long my 2nd hen will survive. She stays on the "sleep shelf" in the coop. I give her fresh water and food every day, and antibiotics every other day mixed with treats.

I will check her for flies/maggots and give her a bath if needed. I just want her to be comfortable like you made your hen.

I have come to conclusion that this internal laying problem strikes at all ages, especially when they turn 4 or 5.

Again Lusty, she fought the good fight, thanks to you doing your absolute best to help her.

I will post updates here on my sick hen. If you unsubscribe to this topic because your hen is gone, please know that I will never forget you.

i'm so very sorry! Poor little girl. You were a good chicken mom and did everything you could. Sorry you had to go through that. It must have been terribly difficult. At least she is at peace now, in chicken heaven, where she can run and fly, take dirt baths, where there are no predators and no pain. She deserves all those wonderful things.

Again, i'm so sorry. :aww

Thank you very much for everyone's support. It was a very rough day. I didn't mention on this post that she didn't go on her own. I couldn't let her continue that kind of suffering....I was told she was dying from the inside out and that I had to put her down NOW....so I called my husband (in between my sobs) and told him he had to come home now and bring lots of ether. I soaked an entire BATH towel in a rubbermaid container and took her out of her nice tub and she layed down on the towel...I closed it up. After about 4 minutes there was a horrible scratching sound in there...must have been the last of her muscles working....and my husband grabbed the container and drove away with it....knowing that I couldn't handle anymore than that. I'm thankful that she is no longer suffering....

I will be waiting for updates on your hen Suebee...and no matter what...I won't forget you either....or airheart...or zookeeper...and everyone else that took such interest in me and my sick little hen. I do thank you all.
