Please pray for a Christmas miracle!Update on Sammy

I'm so glad to hear she is starting to do better. Hopefully it is something quick and easy to fix.

Shortly after I moved in to my new house my Major Mitchell Cockatoo had a sneezing fit. She is wild caught and will climb on my hands but doesn't want to be petted. I'm talking sneezing like 30 times in a row, white foam coming out her nostrils and falling off her perch. She had been to the vet recently for related issues and was given some meds to try as he didn't have a complete diagnosis. She was tearing up her beak when they were flushing her sinuses to try to see what was going on. So when she had this sneezing fit at 1am we rushed to the emergency animal clinic. When we called them and told them what was going on they said they were not use to birds but they would try to help. They asked if I had a bird vet and they called him. He came to help!! They put her in an oxygen cage and she improved. Well come to find out she was allergic to the carpet!

Hope your baby gets better.

Not good news folks. She does have kidney failure or viscral gout as it's called in birds. She'll be coming home on Saturday. We have to keep her as hydrated as possiable and some meds that he's going to give us. More often then not he sees them back in 3-6 months with the same problems. We're going to bring her home and do every thing we can to prolonge her life without letting her suffer. But if she starts going down hill again we will have her uthenized. He stated that he normally sees this in birds that are 30-50 years old. She could be younger than that and just had a bad life. I'm going to believe that she's had a full life. It will help me get threw this. Thank you all for your thoughts and wishes. I'll take pics and post them on Saturday.
Again, THANK YOU very much. Lori

I'm sorry about your bird. What kind of macaw is she? I don't want to even think about anything happening to my little one. My animals are all rescues and even though their lives are cut short sometimes just think about all of the love and compassion that they have had with you that they would not have known otherwise. I also like to think of all of the things they have taught me patience, to be humble, sacrifice of material things. Youve given her a great home and will continue to do so. Good Luck.

I have always loved birds. I wanted a cockitoo since I was 20 but never got one I'm too old. It wouldn't be fair to get one because of how long they live and not knowing who it would go to.

I am so glad there are people like you that can take them in. You are giving her the best life she could have. I wish you the best, and never give up. Keep up your good work, you will be rewarded in the end. God Bless you.

I brought Sammy home yesterday. We arrived at about 7 pm. The vet said that she was coming home to say good bye. How right his predictions. I think she held on just to come home. She passed away this morning at 6:30. We thought that we'd have to put her down. But she died of a stroke or heart attack as I was on the phone trying to get ahold of her vet.
This morning at 330 our pellet stove acted up and it woke me. We brought Sammy into the bedroom with us because there was some smoke. Was up petting and holding her since then. Now I wonder if God was telling us that Sammy needed us. I keep telling myself that she's now beyond any pain. It's going to take some time.
Once again I would like to thank everyone for their well wishes and prayers. God bless you all.
ginbart there might be an older bird out there just waiting for you to find them. Go to petfinder.com. I did and was shocked over how many are hunting for homes that will care for and love them. You can always will them back to the sanctuary.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope her boyfriend will be okay.

Never doubt that you made a huge difference in Sammy's life. She got to know good care and love and she was happy for maybe the first time in her life.

Bless you.

Sarah
