Please Tell Me You Dont See A Roo??

The behavior you talked about. Standing up straight and sidling away when aproached is rooster behavior.
Plus, you said you are hearing odd sounds.
Nearly all roos sound funny at the begining. Even downright awful, like they are being strangled.

I told you the reasons why I think so, It doesnt have yellow leggs an the pattern if off for barred rocks, so that is a pretty sure sign that its mixed, and being mixed that would explain its dark barring.

When you've been at it as long as some of us have, there are just subtle things that you can just look at a bird and tell its a roo and thats what I'm seeing in yours. The facial features, the narrowing in the hackle barring, the way the ends of the tail feathers turn down, and just I have had and seen barred birds all my life, but pure and mixes and I just know what to look for and yours look like a mixed rooster.

Hey I just decided to take a look and pics 2 and 3 tell me that the barred chicken is a roo just from the head structure and the way its standing in the 3rd picture.

I was about 5m or more away from them, it just flapped its feathers once then went back in the run, if i go near them they all run off or if ive got food they all stand next to me eating it off the ground, the noise i heard was like a really high pitched bar weird to explain and i caught the black 1 doing it earlier, is there anything on the shape and feathers that make you think roo, i will try and record the noise and upload it.

I thought it was getting ready to start giving me some eggs as on the few occasions ive watched them from indoors why the other 2 are free ranging she as been re entering tthe coop on her own, where as before they all liked to be pretty close and would run after each other to make sure they were close why ranging.

Could the what i was told a BR be a cuckoo maran, ive been doing some searching and mine looks pretty much like 1 of them.
