I've resisted thinking of the hens as "the girls"--after all, they are mature, productive adults. So, I've named them for favorite aunts and ladies from church: Ruby, Madge, Dolly, Marguerite, Ethel, Roberta, Mary Frances. I also thought about naming them for majestically endowed teachers from elementary school, but it just didn't work to call them Mrs. Uzzell, etc. So, my advice is, go for respect --and-- intimacy.
