Not a production red for sure! He/she is black. I don't know what she/he is check out a sex link. They have coloring like that but I don't know about the legs. I first though Marans but the legs are all wrong for that. BTW I think probably a roo, but should be crowing if mounting I would think.

Sorry I should have clarified. You are right and I meant to say a Production Red cross. I have one exactly like her that was a mutt from a hatchery that was supposed to be a NHR. She is obviously not a pure bred anything. Mine has just as much black as red and the red she has is very dark. Some of the black has a green sheen and she is slightly larger than the other productions. She is also the "HEAD" Hen in the house. Although I have never seen her do a real mount exactly like a rooster, she has jumped on the back of a couple of challengers and showed them who was boss.

I am going with 70/30 now that she is a she. The more I think about the mounting without any crowing....thats just too weird. Ive seen plenty of late crowers...but if they are mounting they are crowing usually.

Thanks for the info. I hate to give up on her. She is so pretty. She is not as friendly as Shirley but we still loveher. I do have another question...she lays down in the grass all the time. She looks like a laying hen when you see her from the front. Do roosters lay in the grass with their feet tucked up under them?? I dont think I can ever recall a rooster "laying" down. Not even in cartoons! .

I may be missing something here but the name Laverne is a male name and very appropriate for a rooster. Call him "Vern" for short.

Laverne Update!!!
I have been reading some of the posts about worming chickens. I noticed that both of mine do the "gaping thing" with their necks and mouth. So i make a trip to my local feed supply and get some Suregard Goat wormer. Give each of my"girls"a dose. Go out to the coop thismorning and open the door to a very loud, booming COCK-A DOODLE-DO!!! Low and behold...Laverne started crowing. Laverne is a rooster after all! No saddle feathers, no hackle feathers, no spurs...the only hint of roosterness was her mounting Shirley. Not sure if it was coincidental to happen after the worming but makes me wonder if the worms were blocking his crow. Anywho...took him back and exchanged him for a real hen this time!! Thanks everyone for all your advice!!!
