When I was working with The Duck Rescue Network, I ran into the same situation. An overmated pekin girl dumpee at the park, bleeding, broken feathers and scared.

I called several different places, identified myself and finally someone said I could take her. An illegally dumped animal has no business in the park.

In the course of capturing her, outraged residents of the mobile home park across the river came to ask what I was doing. I showed them the injuries and educated them about what happened. By the time I left, one person had been to the feed store and back with Triple Duty feed and had my number. If a duck was in trouble they called for advice and help and I knew the ducks were taken care of better. Not best, but better.

The duck I rescued? Her name was Lucky and she was a Cheerio Catcher.

I tried to help some Toulouse geese that were about 2 miles from my house on the river that also runs 1/4 mile behind mine and my neighbor's fields. They kept getting onto the water so were pretty impossible to catch. Somehow the county decided that it was my RESPONSIBILITY to capture these geese as they were the same kind that I own! (but they did not belong to me) So, being a good citizen and not wanted them to get hit on the road, I set up a pen, baited them for a week and we got them herded in and captured. Fast forward to spring and guess what? Said geese went on the road and guess who was ALLOWED to pay the $200.50 livestock at large fine? Last time I will do this county a favor!

*****UPDATE*****

"Juniper", the Embden, is gone.

finally was able to get some free time to stop by the park again. "Herbie", The White Chinese gander, was standing up by the parking lot like he had been waiting for me all day. I had bougth a bag of duck feed just before we got there so i grabbed it and gave him his own little pile to eat while we went to look for Juniper.

We stopped when we got to the pond and put multiple piles of food down for the ducks and ducklings(there were only a few ducklings). We checked out all of the Domestics that were waddling around while we were feeding those guys too. The Pekin hen I mentioned before was even worse this time, her feathers were tinged orangish from blood from being overbred. the crested hen looks like she's in molt but has almost no crest & there were a bunch of little tiny Call Duck-Type hens (black & whites) that were bald on the backs of their heads from all the boys. We tried to catch the Pekin but she's a quick little thing and there was only two of us so we had no luck.

We circled the large pond looking under every tree & shrub for Juniper but we couldn't find her anywhere, I just hope that someone else got her and gave her a good home. When we got back around the pond, Herbie came out of the water and back to where we were, he's really friendly & will come and stand right next to you, He does get a little grabby sometimes though. It's pretty obvious why he's always by himself anymore... besides Juniper being gone, the Canada Geese are really mean to him & this park was pretty full of adults & juveniles. This one little female in particular took quite a liking to my sister and the bag of food she was holding...she would walk near her with her bill hanging open and her tongue sticking out like a little dog..no hissing, just open-mouth begging.... I ended up with the food very shortly after that, lol.

We did find one more very unusual Goose..."IT" looks to be a Canada/Embden(?) crossbreed. IT was a very pissy thing that looked a lot like a toulouse/canada cross in coloring but was VERY heavy like the Embden. It stuck very close with the Canada's and also did not care for Herbie at all. I won't bring IT home, this is the first time i have seen it and it showed up with the Canada Geese i am sure. Really Strange.

We didn't get Herbie today because we didn't have a container with us, but we will soon.

We got a lot of pictures of everyone while we were there. most of the little Call-looking ones are pretty friendly. There's a few Khaki Colored girls and a boy that are SO gorgeous..i think i might have to build a new duck pen, hahaha.

Nope--not a snapper...good thing for all those ducks and geese! Quite a collection there I say! Sounds like Herbie will not be too difficult to capture either--good thing for him! Terri O

I don't think it'll hurt the park to be less a few Drakes, especially the obviously domestic ones. The Pekin very much needs some alone time to heal and then live with less boys. I am just GAGA over those Khaki colored ones, lol. mutts are so pretty!! I am really not sure if the little black oens are Mallard mixes or not, maybe someone dumped a call duck(s) in the past and they crossbred?? I didn't get like any good pics of them but they are Super Cute.

Herbie will be coming home, i got 7 new geese yesterday and there's 2 dalmation colored ones that, if females, might be his new mates. They are Embden/African mixes, no lump yet but the body shape is close to chinese & looong necks.

I can't keep all the birds that probably do need to be removed so i am hoping i can find some homes for a few before i get them.
