Plymouth Rock thread!

Yard full o' rocks :

Well.....here goes!!

I am setting my first set of eggs tomorrow from my Columbian Rocks that came from Canada. I have collected 10 eggs so far and hope to get another 1 or 2 tomorrow. I am hoping that our winter won't be too severe as I have never brooded chicks in the winter before. I have a nice 3' x 5' brooder, enclosed, except for the top. I will place a piece of plexiglass over one end and the heat lamp over the other. I'm guessin' these birds are somewhat accustomed to cold temps so I'm hoping for the best.

Prayin' for good fertility and a great hatch....will keep everyone apprised of how it goes.

Wishing you all a Happy New Year!!!

Good Luck! Hatching Vibes going your way!

There is an article in the current Backyard Poultry magazine in which someone told about using radiant heaters in their brooder that are specifically designed for use with poultry. That might help you. The are called Sweeter Heaters and are made in the US by Infratherm. The author (Gail Damerow)of the article reported being very happy with them and that the chicks seemed to feel the same way. Check it out at www.sweeterheater.com if you are interested. I'm not affiliated with them in anyway and have not tried them myself, but would like to.

Hi all!

I recently got a few baby chicks. The guy who had them was only able to keep 4, but had to order more so they would ship. I ended up with 6 of the babies. One ended up passing away. (Which my oldest son promptly turned the death into a math lesson for his little brother. (Six minus One is Five!)

He called me and let me know that he was moving and couldn't keep the original 4, so he brought them to me. One of his Barred Rocks is larger than the ones I have, and I am thinking she might be a roo! The other BR are darker in color, and their combs are just little yellow nubs right now. They are all 7 weeks old (except a RIR who is 8 weeks).

What do you think? Is Houdi a dude?

If that is the case, one of the little girls I thought was a boy will need a name change too! (Mustachio-because of the black mustache!)
