Plymouth Rock thread!

Hi all, just wanted to let you all know I finally have the answer to whether or not my roo is pure barred rock. Apparently not.

He's throwing the expected black and black barred chicks but also little yellow and buff ones! They are from Silver Grey Dorking hens and have barring so they are defiantly his but I'm at a loss to work out what color they'll be. They seem to be feathering in munch like Dorkings would but didn't have true chipmunk markings so...?

Apparently where he came from there were some fertility problems with the barred roo early in the season so a white PR roo was put in there for a while but I'd assumed the white would just be covering normal barring. The fact my roo is carrying gold and producing chicks that aren't black or barred makes me wonder what could be hiding under the white.

I'm heading to the local auction this weekend in hope of picking up some pretty barred ladies for the laying flock. There were some surprisingly nice birds last auction.

Hi Guys,
I would appreciate it if you would look these over and let me know if you see a possible cockerel , other than the obvious one. I think it's 4 pullets, but am hoping only 3 because I don't think the boy is going to grow into much of a man. I would appreciate your opinion on him to. I know it's early, but I will onmly have a short time to get another. thanks all.......stan

My opinion is

Pix 1 - both pullets
Pix 2 - 2 pullets (one without a head in pix is cockerel)
Pix 3 - cockerel
Pix 4 - cockerel

Hope that helps

Wish you were closer by....I have some extra cockerels right now from good lines and 7 eggs due to hatch Sunday. Good luck

Thanks Scott,
pic 3 and 4 are the same chick, about 4-5 weeks old. Is he too young to judge? There are 4 pullets I think, 2 in the 1st pic and 2 in the 2nd pic. I was kind of hoping that 1 of those 4 would grow into a nice rooster. I just don't think the boy in pic 3 and 4 is going to make much. He is only 5 weeks old, and from a slow maturing line though, so it's possible he might turn out good?.........stan

I think he's way too young to be judging yet, especially if a slow developer. I had some rose comb rir that at 14 wks were scrawny looking things, tall, leggy and skinny. But they grew out to be some nice looking cockerels, just had to wait for it.

I have some that are around 8-9 weeks and they change constantly. I did have 2 "runts" that I did get rid of as they were at least 1/2 the size of the rest. I would say to raise all of them to AT LEAST 20 weeks before making any decisions. Good LF Heritage type birds take a while to fill out and develop...you might just be surprised with him!!

Well, we have a hatching happening here. Of the 12 I have set 8 have hatched so far. They were suppose to hatch saturday and started yesterday. After them I have 3 more in a couple more days then another 6 two weeks later.
