Plymouth Rock thread!

Those look nice Stan. Hopefully I'll get some coloring like that this spring. I've got Splash roosters with black and barred hens.

They've a lot of blue on legs and that's curious using yellow legged barred hens. Is it the Rooster that imparts more to leg coloring than hens? Or is it akin to feather color and the hens give to male offspring?

I've asked here before but will give it another try, anyone know of heritage Barred breeders up here in New England? I need more hens and obviously the variety needs work on body type.
The blue/dark on the legs is likely due to the fact that some of the hens and/or the main rooster has genes that are more closely related to the original stock of blues.

-OR- Someone out there has decided to try and start from scratch and are on F1 - F-4 working on reinventing the Blue Rock as it was developed in the beginning. It is entirely possible that some of that stock has worked it's way out. I have to say...it has crossed my mind to do the same thing.

Hi

Barred Rocks are Black with a barring gene added producing a barred chicken. Black chickens often have slate coloured legs, the barring gene has a linked gene which takes away most of the slate colour then modifies the leg colour to yellow.
This is the same with the blues except the white half brings the modifiers to change the leg colour to yellow but strain and feed play an important role in this.
In the UK Blue rock Barred rock

Black = Black (dark legs)
Blue = Exhibition colour male or female (Good legs)
Splash = Light male (perfect legs)
Hope I'm right?

A couple pics from the oct 29 hatch. I'll upload them small, but you can click on the pics to enlarge them.

still early yet, but it looks like only one of the blues will have decent confirmation and 2 of the barreds are going to be really nice. Not that the others are "that" bad, but they might end up in the egg laying pen instead of the breeding program. I was not thrilled with the rooster ratio, but I did need another good confirmation roo and it looks like I got one. All is not lost, LOL

Hi, Kimchick - those are Silver Penciled Plymouth Rocks. Yes, they are a very, very pretty breed! Where did you get them?

I got them from a breeder in Pennsylvania. He traded them to me for a favor of baby sitting a brood for him for a few weeks until he had coop room. This is my first pretty breed of chicken. I usually have back yard "mutts" so I don't know yet. I think I'm going to breed them and see some pretty babies first. :) Sadly I may have to cull a spare roo..he was the runt and never really has thrived. He's got crop issues. :(

My other roo, he's really breathtaking. And a friendly guy too, hopefully he'll stay that way.

And yes..silver penciled plymouth rocks. I guess I mistyped up there. :)

Hi Kimchick

I'm really happy to see more silver pencilled plymouth rocks! They sure are scarce.

I have a small flock of them: 2 sppr roosters and 9 sppr hens and am looking forward to raising a few more next spring.

Once yours are mature, I'd like to see more pics of them. I have no one close to compare mine with. :D
