Plymouth Rock thread!

I just got off the phone with Danny Padgett and my SPPR eggs are on their way. :) This is second part to my Silver Penciled Plymouth Rock breeding plans. I plan to get more eggs from him next spring also. In three weeks I hope to be posting pictures of some chicks. ;)

Scott you where interested in some good Columbian Rock Bantams. This is a male from Calif called one wattle.

I posted some pictures of his off spring on a new thread for Heritage Bantams. They belong to Danny Feathers of Okla.
This is one of the best typed male Rock Bantams of color I have seen. BOB

Wouldn't that be just and awesome site too in a large version with Buff in place of the white on one of these, it can be done and I'm going for it. uh huh!

Are you going to cross Buff Rocks to Columbians to accomplish that?

No, no Buff rocks I have some Buff columbian hens from the Delaware remake project(from the F1xF1 mating they are a offshoot of the project) I plan to use them I have to get that onto a more rock type frame and I have this super rocky type NH male (long backed) with striped hackles x one of those awesome Columbian rock girls from your and Rons doings this should give me the male side to work with, should sex link out to reddish/buff males from this cross. Gonna take a spell to do it but hey I got time while I'm working on other stuff too. I put on the bantam thread this is a TALL order and a long row to hoe, bout as difficult as that Del project I'd imagine.

I am setting a course for the next breeding season and one of my projects is to reduce/remove the brassiness in my male Columbians. An unexpected off shoot of this project is that I have gotten 3 very nice pullets, and these pullets are 3/4 Columbian Rock and 1/4 Barred Rock (from a well know breeder of barred rocks, and winner of many points in Rock Club shows)

Here are a few pictures, all of the same pullet. She will be 13 weeks old this next Sunday.

Notice the long FLAT back, lack of cushion, tail spread and front end. I believe she carries herself with good balance and her leg color is exceptional. Her color is a bit off as one would expect, but I think I can clean that up. I am going to individually mate her back to her sire as soon as she reaches POL, hopefully in Jan/Feb. If type holds as I expect, I think she can move me down the road a good bit. She is certainly carrying the type of the Barred line she is out of.

I need you to use the ZOOM on your camera as I am on a phone and she is TINY on here lol.

I may try to send you some pics of the bird I got from you. I can't post pics from my phone.

Scott sent me the pictures earlier and I told him I liked the Columbian female but it looked like the cross was kind of dark like a Partridge. It was this female that I thought was pure Columbian from Canada. I told him I don't think I have ever heard of a barred rock Columbian cross to work like this. She sure has pure Plymouth Rock traits as most Columbians over he years have been white rock Light Brahma crosses at least the last 40 years or so. Way to go. I look forward to seeing her sons next year.he did not have the arrows for me so that's how I got fooled. bob

Or crop :)

I do a lot of cropping.

Scott, I've done it here for DMRippy (and you)
People may be able to see her quality better like this. I think she is beautiful. I don't know much about this variety, but what is it you see wrong with her colour? Looks good to me.

Aoxa....thank you for fixing my "mess". I'm a bit technically challenge with the photo editing stuff....your cropped pix look much better, thanks again

As for color, she's a little "smutty" in areas, primary wings are carrying too much white

Overall, she's not bad and certainly not a huge mess that will be difficult to fix I don't think....I'm just hoping she can carry this type forward, especially into my males. The barred line she has lineage to were incredible birds.....Fred has seen them!

Getting type improvement is best if it comes from the hen. I know that is an old fashioned view, but it's one I hold to firmly.

You can always eat your mistakes. But, I do not believe this effort was a mistake. If it "sticks" and you make a bunch of awesome Columbian Rocks because of this in two more gens, you're gonna be admired for taking this risk. Sometimes, you just have to try stuff.
