Plymouth Rock thread!

UUUGGGGHHHH, 100F here today and my 2 black rock girls (Mammy and Cora) are broody, again!! Second time this year.

Imagine this, 100F outside, humidity has got to be 80%+, I have the 2 black girls in a coop that is 4'x6'x8'tall, lots a room. Only other companiomn is a young splash rock cockerel. And where are they??!! BOTH of the silly things are sittin' in the same nest box!! And the box is only 12" x 12"....oh well, I'm not worrying too much about them and the heat, LOL.

I have my hova sitting on my back porch, in the shade. I just happened to open it, and the thermometers, both of them, said 100. Im almost hoping for a tropical storm to zoom thru here to cool things off.

I have a bunch of broodies, too. Whats the deal?? They are all jammed in my one community box, panting, on top of each other. How much hotter could they get??

I have 2 broodies also! One Light Sussex is due July 28, and a new layer Silkie (have only got about a dozen eggs from her). It is just tooooo dang hot for the girls. My Sussex is in my attached garage, which has a heat/air conditioner vent into it. It stays alot cooler than outside anyway. The Silkie is still outside, and has been on a nest 3 days. I dunno what to do with her. Never thought I would say this ..... I do NOT want any more broodies! (this year anyway!)

I've never had a broody Delaware, which is surprising, really. I've had Nugget, Nora, Panda and now Smoky broody this year. Charlotte faked being broody to deter Isaac when I returned him to the flock after Dutch went to live with Karen. Seriously, she did! She is one smart cookie, that Char!

So far this year I've had, brood and hatch

Cora and Mammy - 2 black rocks
Sugar - Delaware
Big Mama - Blue Rock

And now I have a splash silkie, and both black rocks trying again. The silkie is sitting on air!! I have taken everything away from her (including the golf ball), dunked her in cold water and she still sits.

I dunked both the black rock girls last night but they were at it again today....and like the silkie...ain't sitting on a thing!! We are leaving for the lake tomorrow so I guess those three are in for an "ice water baptism" before I leave.

Enough already!!

I don't need any more chicks for a while. Next ones I hatch are gonna be Columbian Rocks if I can get a few of the boys interested in the ladies....

I could use a good hatch of my splash rock roo over those 2 black rock girls, but he acts TOTALLY uninterested. Maybe I need to ask the Dr for some hormone patches or a few viagra to slip into his water??

He's 24 weeks old, shows no interest, doesn't crow, and roosts outside instead of in the coop with the girls.....go figure. I hope he's just a late bloomer

Oh goodness...this has been The Year of the Broody at my place! I've had broody after broody after broody. Hubby made me a (way kewl) "breeder cage"/broody buster....it's got a hardware cloth bottom, and I block access to the nest box when I'm using it to break a broody. It's had hen after hen after hen in it this year! Several more than once! Sheesh.

I toss my broodies in my grow out pen, so they are running around with half grown chickies...I figure if anything will change their mind about being broody, its having to be cooped up with a bunch of young heathens.

I've had a million broodies as well. Right now I have 2 hens coparenting 4 kids, although 1 has stopped staying with them at night....1 hen who readopted her old 8 weeks old pair (lol), 2 white leghornx and 1 rir sharing a nest with only 1 wooden egg, 1 broody cochin on some OE eggs and 1 big ol half bald australorp on eggs. Plus a partridge bantam cochin on a BUNCH of eggs. I am going to split her nest between her and the RIR/Leghorn girls as they are all due this weekend. Good god, that is 9 broodies. Save me.

I've lost track of how many hens I've had go broody this year, including two of my BR hens who don't know they're supposed to go broody. I have one hen who's been sitting on eggs for the past month or so. I finally gave in and put some bantam cochin eggs under her, which this year has been the best way I've had to bust a broody.

Out of all of this broodiness, guess how many chicks I've gotten? Two!!

I put some pheasant eggs under one of my BR broodies and I had three hens tag-team sitting on them. All the others gave up except for this last hen.

They only did that because I bought an incubator last year expecting that would be the only way I get chicks.
