Plymouth Rock thread!

You are correct, blacks are not recognized in LF Plymouth Rocks, however, the blacks are recognized in the bantam size. I am in the process of developing a line of LF blacks as you know....not that the APA will recognize them

Yes, and black is an absolutely normal result of breeding blues. Some board may not recognize the color, but it sure exists because I have one. And she's a broody mess. They don't recognize splash, either, but I have one of those as well, yet another result of breeding the blues. If you breed a blue to a blue, you get splash and black whether or not you want them. Blue is genetically a black bird with a blue gene added.

I did NOT know you were make LF blacks... I thought they were a BY PRODUCT to help in the Columbian's. I did NOT know that about bantams. Thanks.
Last year I bred a very nice Barred Female to a Columbian male and the resulting offspring were; barred males and black females. I kept the black females. This year I will be breeding the black females back to a Columbian male. Offspring should be Columbian (incomplete Columbian in some cases) males and females AND Black males/females. I will be keeping the Columbian patterned males in an attempt to get rid of the "brassiness" in my Columbian line. As a secondary benefit, I should then also have LF Blacks that will breed true as I will only be breeding black to black...resulting offspring "should" be all black.

Seems that there are few if any flocks of LF Black Rocks, so I thought it would be neat to develop a small flock of them.

AH! That is what I thought you were doing, the part about breed the black was news to me. I would LOVE to have an all black flock of rocks... that really was my ultimate goal. I have 2 splash hens, but I am not liking the leg color and I am just not sure how to fix it. I crossed them with a partridge rock HOPING to see better leg color, BUT the leg color on the chicks is WORSE

My guess is your rocks will have much better leg color. UNLESS there is something about columbian genes that mask the leg color like on my splash hens. They really don't show the leg color but the chicks sure do

If you need a partner in crime to help with the 5 breeders for 5 years thing.... I am up for it

Speckledhen... I LOVE the blacks and my splash hens. I knew they existed and have been hunting blacks for almost 2 years

but they are like finding hens teeth.

You should have black Donna. As Speckeledhen said, when you breed blue to blue, you will get splash, black and blue. I have all three colors from Halo's breeding. Will have my own bred from Good Shepherd birds this spring........stan
