Plymouth Rock thread!

Oh, I'm quite sure he would have.  If memory serves, he did rate the Adamson Acres birds ahead of them, however.  Perhaps if Walt comes by, we could always ask him.

I have talked Walt Leonard about Dick Horstmans Silver Penciled Plymouth Rocks and he told me that Dick Horstman has very nice Silver Penciled Plymouth Rocks. That is good for me. :) I would love to see pictures of the birds that was ranked higher.

What can anyone tell me about the Blue Barred rocks? I traded a pullet for what was supposed to be two cockerels but they're both pullets. Would it hurt to cross them into my blacks. I have only the one black roo and he's not good at breeding. Long story. So I traded for the blues thinking I might use one of them. Again these are Kathy's line. I did see him on a SLW the other day, so I know he can dance. I just need him to dance with his own kind.
DMRippy on here I believe has a project of those going on. Jeff
Yes I have had Blue Barred rocks for 3-4 generations now. I use blue barred pullets with my GSBR roo. you should hatch about 50/50 of each color. I will let you know it can take a few generations to get nice barring on the blues.....not sure why but the black will bar well the blues not so much. I keep picking the pullets with the best barring and it is almost consistent barring on the blues now. I don't like to breed blue to blue as I don't use splash here much. especially in the barred rocks. Are you the one that Pm'd me? I hadn't read this so I didn't know you already had a birds. :) if you want some new blood check with me in the spring.....but you may already have a good start. How is the barring on the pullets? in the first few generations mine only had barring in the hackles.....now they have it all over mostly.

very interesting all the SPPR breeders now.....count me in too. I got them for a project but y'all have me intrigued. hehe. mine are from Duck Horstman. still too young to judge anything on my birds.

Hi DMRippy
Very happy to see you join into the Silver Penciled Plymouth Rock breeding. :) We need as many breeders as we can get to move forward with this very rare breed. :)

There seems to be a lot of chatter about "lines" and I think we need to come to an understanding on something that was pointed out to me by a number of judges. As long as the breeder (for example - Scott, is breeding the birds), then it is Scott's line of birds. However, once those birds (or eggs) leave the breeder and another person begins caring for them, making breeding decisions, etc, etc.....the line is no longer "Scott's line" as that person is no longer responsible for the breeding

From that point, the line and the resulting offspring (good or bad) are the responsibility of and belong to "the new breeder"....not the original

As an example, my original trio of Columbian Rocks came to me via Dick Nieuwland in Canada. I have bred them for 3 years now and I have infuse blood from another CR line and I am in the process of doing the same thing via a Barred Rock line. As I am now making the breeding decisions, the line is "my" line....it is no longer Nieuwland and I believe that if you ask breeders of a known line, they will all agree with this concept

Have a great Friday y'all
